Nokia’s Lumia 800 now available in the UK, pre-orders have been the best ever for a Nokia phone
Nov 17th
Nokia’s Lumia 800 is now available in the UK for the Orange network. They say that pre-order demand has been great – in fact it has been the best ever for any Nokia phone. Orange currently offers a free XBOX 360 console with each upgrade – that probably helped… The Lumia 800 is Nokia’s first Windows Phone – and it sports a 3.7″ WVGA (854×480) ClearBlack AMOLED display. Other features include a 1.4Ghz CPU, 512MB RAM, 16GB of internal memory and a 8mp, f/2.2 aperture camera with carl zeiss optics. The Lumia 800 is made from durable polycarbonate plastic. read more

Apple files a patent discussing an OLED BLU for an LCD display
Nov 11th
Apple filed a new patent that discusses using an OLED backlighting unit (BLU) for an LCD display. According to the patent filing, an OLED BLU unit may be thinner than a LED BLU and also have an improved light uniformity without using light guides. The BLU may act like a ‘one large white pixel’, but Apple also discusses the option that it may have several controllable ‘areas’ which will receive grayscale image information which may be used to modulate the light brightness (like local-dimming in full-array LED panels). Finally Apple says that the BLU will include one or more ‘OLED units’ bonded between two glass pieces. We’re not entirely sure what they mean. Using an OLED BLU for an LCD display has been discussed before, although it seems that it will not be a very efficient design – if you have a white OLED, why not use color-filters and not an LCD at all? This is the architecture that LG Display proposes for its upcoming OLED TVs . read more

HTC to use AMOLED in their phones again?
Nov 10th
There are reports that HTC is preparing a new Android smartphone – which will come with a 4.3″ qHD Super AMOLED display (which seems to be the same one used in Motorola’s Droid RAZR ). This will be HTC’s first OLED phone since they switched back to LCD in June 2010 due to Samsung’s AMOLED supply issues . It’s great to see HTC back into OLEDs… The new handset (codename Ville) will sport a new UI (Sense 4.0), a 1.5Ghz dual-core processor and an 8mp camera (1080p video support). HTC will announce the Ville during MWC 2012 and release it in April 2012. read more

Sony announces a new 720p OLED microdisplay
Nov 4th
Sony released a new OLED microdisplay today, the 0.7″ ECX332A which offers 1280×720 (720p) resolution. This microdisplay is aimed towards electronic viewfinder (EVF) applications and offers 97% NSTC color gamut, 0.01ms response time and 200 cd/m2 brightness. The ECX332A employs the same white OLED and color-filters architecture as Sony’s 0.5″ XGA ECX331A (the one used in the A77 and A65 DSLRs and the NEX-7 and NEX-5N mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras). read more

New Apple patent describes a transparent OLED on solid background, new OLED iPhone rumors emerge
Nov 4th
Apple filed a new patent describing a new display system which incorporates a transparent OLED on a solid white background. The idea is to conserve battery use – and when there’s a need to display a white pixel, you simply switch the OLED pixel off, which then shows the white background beneath. The system also includes a switchable layer between the OLED and the white background. This layer can be either transparent or black – which will allow to see black pixels (which is not possible in normal transparent OLEDs). Apple has filed several OLED patents in the past years. In July the company filed a patent for a 3D multiple transparent OLED displays device , and in February the company filed three different OLED patents , the main one being an OLED with an integrated touch sensor. read more

Kyoto’s MOMAK museum to use Panasonic’s OLED lighting panels
Nov 2nd
Panasonic Electric Works (PEW) announced that they will provide next-generation lighting (LEDs and OLEDs) to be used in a new exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, Japan (MOMAK). The exhibition ( “Takeshi Kitamura: Master of Contemporary Weaving”) will be illuminated by ten OLED modules and thirty LED lighting fixtures. This is a pilot project – the purpose of which is to verify the future potential of OLED lighting in museums. According to Panasonic, museum exhibitions require high color-rendering and low UV and IR rays (which can damage artwork). PEW says they expect next generation lighting to be adopted in museums as the main form of illumination. read more

Nokia shows a flexible device prototype, probably uses an OLED display
Oct 27th
Nokia is showing a beautiful new bendable device prototype called the Kinetic. The idea is that you can bend and twist the whole device to perform certain actions: for example bending it towards you is used to select an option or zoom-in on an image. Nokia didn’t say what kind of display technology is used in this device , but it’s most likely a flexible OLED. The display is 4″ in size and has impressive viewing angles according to reports. In the past two years we’ve seen several companies present flexible/bendable OLED Prototypes: Samsung , LG and UDC , Toshiba , Sony , AUO and the FLC with UDC . Nokia is already buying AMOLED panels from Samsung and LG, so it’s likely they are collaborating with one of the Korean makers. via Engadget
