Sony quits the consumer OLED TV market, not really news
Jan 8th
The Daily Yomiuri posted an article stating that Sony has quit the consumer OLED TV market. The company will continue to produce OLED monitors for the professional/corporate market. This news was reported by a lot of online blogs and sites. Sony XEL-1 But it’s hardly surprising – and it isn’t really news… Sony’s only OLED TV, the XEL-1 was discontinued back in February 2010 . And Sony said several times that it is currently focusing on the professional market, with products such as the 24.5″ BVM-F250 broadcasting monitor . Sony still has an active OLED research program. Sony is also one of the founders of Japan Display , a new small/medium display maker.

Japan Display to convert a 6-Gen LTPS fab to AMOLED?
Nov 20th
Last week we reported that Japan Display (the new small/medium display maker that merged Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba’s businesses ) may consider to accelerate OLED mass production in a $2.7 billion investment in R&D and production . JD also bought Panasonic’s Mobara 6-Gen a-Si LCD plant. Today we hear reports that JD will convert the new plant to LTPS, and will later use this plant to produce AMOLED displays . It seems that those plans aren’t final, but JD’s CEO said that the company could start mass producing OLEDs by 2013. If JD does decide to convert that 6-Gen plant to AMOLED production, this will be the largest AMOLED plant currently planned for small/medium panels ( Samsung and LG are both building 8-Gen plants , but these will be used for OLED TV panels). read more

Japan Display to accelerate OLED mass production

There are reports that Japan Display (the new small/medium display maker that merged Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba’s businesses ) plans to accelerate OLED mass production. They plan to invest $1.3 billion in OLED R&D (which probably includes pilot production plants), and later on invest a further $1.4 billion towards mass production. We don’t know when they actually plan to start producing panels. Back in September, when Japan Display was just formed, representatives from Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba said that they certainly consider OLEDs to be the ‘core technology’ of the next generation small size and medium size displays , and will invest in OLED R&D. It’s good to hear that now they are accelerating those plans. read more

Sony’s A77 to use an XGA OLED viewfinder, maybe an OLED display too
Aug 10th
Back in March there were rumors that Sony’s upcoming Alpha A77 DSLR will have an OLED viewfinder . That camera is not official yet, but Sony did submit it to a design contest – and from that page (which was taken down in the meantime) we can see that indeed it has an XGA OLED electronic viewfinder (or Tru-Finder as Sony calls it). We’re not sure, but it also mentions a second OLED display – perhaps the ‘normal’ camera back display will also be an OLED (if someone can translate the Japanese text below, it’ll be great). The viewfinder resolution (XGA, or 1024×768) is rather a disappointment – as it was rumored that this will use Sony’s 720p (1,280×720) resolution. There were also some rumors that eMagin is behind that OLED microdisplay. While eMagin do not have an XGA product, they have mentioned that they are working with a customer on a special ‘commercial’ microdisplay, so this may be it (disclose: I’m holding some shares in eMagin…). read more

Samsung to begin test production of 32" OLED TVs in 2H 2012, will start investing in a Gen-8 fab in 3Q 2011
Mar 11th
Digitimes posted an interesting update on Sony, Samsung and LG’s OLED TV plans. They say that Samsung plans to begin test production of 32″ OLED TVs in the second half of 2012. The company will start to invest in Gen-8 OLED TV production lines in 3Q 2011. LG will be able to make 30″ OLED TVs be the end of 2011, and (as we know already ) plans a Gen-8 fab for 2011. Sony meanwhile seems to be focusing on professional OLED monitors , and doesn’t have any active consumer OLED TV program.

Sony announces the Trimaster EL professional OLED monitors (17" and 25")
Feb 16th
Back in January we reported that Sony plans to release new professional OLED monitors – and they finally did so today. The Trimaster EL series offers two sizes – 17″ ( BVM-E170 ) and 25″ ( BVM-E250 ). The monitors offer hyper-accurate color reproduction and ‘perfect’ image quality without motion blur due to the OLED’s fast response time. The display support HDMI, DisplayPort, 3G-SDI, SD-SDI and HD-SDI. The monitors are thin – 148mm in depth. These monitors aren’t cheap: the BVM-E250 will be released in Japan in May 2011 for 2.5 million yen ($30,000) and the BVM-E170 will be released in July for 1.3 million yen ($15,000).

Sony PSP2 to have an OLED display?
Jan 24th
There are some reports from Japan that the new Sony PSP2 mobile gaming console will have an OLED display. The report says that the display will be ‘larger than normal’ – the original PSP has a 3.8″ (480×272) LCD, so we assume that the OLED will be 4″ or more. Sony are expected to announce the new PSP later this week. Other unofficial features include 3G support (for over-the-air multiplayer gaming and game downloads) and Wi-Fi. This is not the Playstation Phone that is also expected from Sony, and the PSP2 will not include phone capabilities.

Sony shows a new 24.5" OLED glasses-free 3D TV, to launch for the B2B market in 2011?
Jan 9th
Sony has unveiled a new OLED TV prototype, this one is a 24.5″ model that supports glasses-free 3D . Interestingly, Sony plans to launch this TV during 2011 – but for the B2B market (for professional broadcasting use). The quality is great, but the price will be very high of course, so Sony cannot market this to consumers. This is not Sony’s first OLED aimed for broadcasting professionals – they also offer the PVM-740 monitor that has a 7.4″ OLED (but no 3D). This TV seems to be quite identical to the one Sony showed at CES 2010 , although now the 3D is glasses-free. In any case, it’s great to hear yet again that Sony hasn’t bailed out on OLEDs … read more

Sony shows an OLED based 3D 720p Heads-Up-Display
Jan 7th
Sony is showing a new 3D Heads-Up-Display (visor) prototype – that uses two 720p (1280×720) OLED microdisplays. Other features includes 5.1 surround audio and a blue LED strip on the front. This is just a prototype, but it’s good to see Sony using OLEDs there. It’s not clear whether Sony is actually developed the OLED microdisplays themselves – it might be that they’re using eMagin ‘s SXGA OLED-XL displays. read more
