Samsung updates on AMOLED displays

Samsung (or actually Lee Woo-Jong, SMD’s marketing VP) is giving us some interesting updates on their AMOLED displays and production plants. So first of all, they expect the new 5.5-Gen plant to start mass producing in July 2011. The new plant will increase Samsung’s AMOLED capacity ten-fold: from 3 million displays a month to 30 million (assuming all displays made in the new plant will be around 3″). Samsung also says that they now expect AMOLED screens shipments to reach 700 million by 2015 ( in May, they said it’ll be 600 ). read more

Samsung’s OLED R&D VP: OLED TVs coming ‘soon’

bNetTV has posted a short interview with Brian Berkeley, Samsung’s OLED R&D VP. He’s not willing to actually say when OLED TVs should arrive, but he did say they are ‘coming soon’, and that Samsung “have their eyes set on the possibility of OLED TVs”. Brian also says that OLEDs will be especially suited for 3D TVs – we’ve heard that before, of course, from Samsung and from Sony as well. A couple of months ago, Brian said that ‘OLED TVs are viable’ . It’s good to hear that he sees them coming soon now!

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab said to be debuting at IFA next month

We’d already heard that Samsung’s 7-inch Android-based tablet (apparently known as the Galaxy Tab ) would be rolling out sometime in the third quarter of this year , and it looks like we now also know when it’ll be making its official debut. According to South Korea’s JoongAng Daily, an unnamed “high-ranking official” at Samsung has confirmed that the device will be officially unveiled at IFA, which kicks off September 3rd in Berlin. No more new details beyond that, unfortunately, but previous reports have suggested that the device will match its smartphone counterpart with an AMOLED display, and boast some decent specs across the board, including Android 2.2, a 1.2GHz Cortex A8 processor, 16GB of on-board memory, and both WiFi and 3G connectivity. Pantech drops AMOLED completely due to shortage, may resume use in 2H 2011

The Pantech Vega that just hit Korea may boast a sizable 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, but don’t expect future phones from the Helio manufacturer to follow suit — after suffering the same shortages that drove HTC to Sony’s SLCD-illuminated doorstep , Pantech’s also temporarily giving active-matrix organic technology the boot. Now, you may not give two nickels about the technologies in Pantech’s next handset, but the firm’s got a finger on the industry’s pulse. So when an unnamed executive says “phones to be rolled out in the first half of next year” won’t use AMOLED, that hints at when the shortage for US-bound devices might also let up. In case you’re curious, 2H 2011 is when Samsung’s next AMOLED facility is slated to open, though by that point AU Optronics and TPO Display should be shipping the screens as well. Samsung plans to use an 8-Gen line for OLED TVs "in the future"

Samsung are still keen on OLED TVs , which will by the “dominant technology in next-generation TVs by 2015″. They will be the ultimate active-shutter 3D TVs . Samsung has plans to use an Gen 8 (2200mm x 2500mm sheet size) production line for the OLED TVs. There’s no date or real commitment yet, but this will hopefully happen within the next few years. Samsung 14-inch 3D OLED prototype There are still some technical issues to overcome. For their upcoming 5.5-Gen plant , SMD plans to introduce low-temperature poly-Si TFTs using conventional excimer laser annealing (ELA). TFTs formed with this technology often exhibit variation in characteristics, and this method might prove difficult in larger line. SMD is also working on other technologies: improved ELA technology, sequential lateral solidification (SLS) and super grain silicon (SGS).

Super-LCD compared to an AMOLED, Super-AMOLED display

Here’s a nice comparison between Sony’s Super-LCD (as used in the HTC desire now ) and Samsung’s AMOLED and Super-AMOLED displays. The conclusion: ” all the displays were really good, they all had decent color and respectable viewing angles. The super AMOLED was noticeably less reflective than the others and was blacker with the best viewing angles. Super LCD had similar detail in the rock face video and had a superior horizontal viewing angle compared to a regular AMOLED display. The AMOLED had slightly better blacks (you can’t tell from the video – sorry) and slightly better vertical viewing angles. Both Super LCD and AMOLED were very reflective. ” read more
