Philips and BASF co-develop transparent OLEDs for car roofs
Jan 19th
Remember Daimler’s Smart Forvision concept EV ? That car has a transparent solar-panels on the roof, see-through dashboard and transparent OLEDs for internal lighting – on the roof of the car. We knew that Daimler was collaborating with BASF on this concept, and today BASF released a press release saying that indeed they developed those panels together with Philips. The OLEDs are transparent when switched off, allowing for a clear view outside the vehicle, yet providing light only within the vehicle when switched on. The transparent OLED sandwich structure can be combined with equally transparent solar cells, as was demonstrated in the Smart Forvision. This developing was achieved as part of a longstanding cooperation (since 2006) between BASF and Philips in the research and development of OLED modules. read more

Philips’ Lumiblade Living Shapes: the 2nd generation "OLED wall"
Aug 31st
In 2010 Philips showed a beautiful OLED installation called The OLED Wall , made from lot’s of small lumiblade OLED panels, which featured a mirror-like visualization using a camera. Today Philips unveiled the 2nd generation wall, called Lumiblade Living Shapes – which also offers a mirror-like feature, and can also display text information. The new Living Shapes is made from modular OLED units – each has 16 OLED panels (4×4), and each OLED panel is a 5×5.5 cm in size. The company is showing one version (shown above) that features 72 modules (1,152 OLED tiles in total) – they say it’s the world’s largest OLED lighting product (but it’s not the largest OLED product – Mitsubishi’s 6-meter OLED GeoGlobe has 10,362 PMOLED displays! ). read more

Students studying Communications at the University of Maastricht (Netherlands) visited Philip’s Lumiblade Creative Lab workshops in Aachen, Germany. They produced a nice video spot about the lab and Philip’s OLED lighting panels, and apparently got good grades, too. Philips opened the Lumiblade Creative Lab in April 2010, a place where professionals from a wide range of creative backgrounds can experience and experiment with Lumiblades OLED lighting panels . Philips’ lab can also give advice, guidance and practical support for OLED Lighting projects.

Black Eyed Pea Fergie goes on stage with an OLED outfit
Jun 29th
American hip-hop group Black Eyed Peas went on stage on Paris on three shows, wearing clothes embroidered with LEDs and OLED lighting panels from Philips. Fergie had a ‘leather cat woman’ outfit that has 75 white Lumiblade OLED panels. The panels were controlled remotely – and were synchronized to the music and lighting sequences. Philips’ OLED panels (Lumiblades) were the first to be released back in 2009. Philips’ panels come in different sizes, shapes and colors, not just white squares. Check out our hands-on review of the Lumiblade OLED lighting panels . read more

Jason Bruges shows a new artwork using Philips Lumiblade OLED panels
Apr 25th
We’ve seen a lot of new OLED Lighting artwork and designs lately. The latest one is Mimosa by Jason Bruges which is an interactive artwork, inspired by the Mimosa family of plants, which change kinetically to suit their environmental conditions. The OLEDs are used to create delicate light petals, forming flowers, which open and close in response to visitors.
