More details and a video of Audi’s concept OLED designs
Mar 4th
A couple of days ago we reported that Audio is experimenting with OLED technologies – with a concept car that has hundreds of Philips-made triangular OLED panels on the car’s body. Today we present a video and more details about Audi’s OLED designs: Audi actually has 3 OLED based designs. The first is rather simple – rear lights that are made from four small red OLED panels, and a flashing turn indicator made from 8 panels. Audi actually has a roadmap for introducing OLEDs. They say that OLEDs will be used as rear lights in the “relatively near future”. It will take a few more years for OLEDs to be used in brake lights as these need to be about five times brighter than rear lights. read more

Germany launches an OLED lighting efficiency research project
Mar 1st
Germany launched a new research project called HARPOON that aims to improve OLED lighting’s efficiency in a cost effective way. We don’t have a lot of details about this project yet, but it seems that it will involve software simulation and optimizations of vacuum related production processes. The project’s coordinated is Philips, and it is partly funded by the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia. First results will be published in 2014.

A new EU project aims to speed up the commercialisation and adoption of organic and large area electronics
Feb 24th
There’s a new European collaboration project that aims to help the organic and large area electronics industry. The COLAE (Commercializing Organic and Large Area Electronics) project is a pan-European initiative with 18 partners from 12 countries. The project partners will jointly develop technology demonstrators and provide services such as training events, access to pilot lines and more. Several of these partners have a range of OLED (both lighting and displays) pilot facilities that can now be accessed by European companies for free. CPI Printed Electronics center Partners include the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland (which is the projcet coordinator), the Fraunhofer Institute , CSEM and UK’s CPI center which will provide access for its OLED lighting pilot line facilities.

Samsung planning more OLED TVs in the future
Feb 17th
Samsung obviously has big plans for OLED TVs – and in fact it seems that the company sees OLEDs replacing LCDs in the (near?) future . Rober Kind, head of consumer electronics at Samsung, says that 55″ is the largest size panel they can currently make, and they wanted to first make the largest OLED they can. But Samsung’s Super OLED TV range will grow – and will include new models in the future. He also agrees that one of the problems with OLED TVs is that they are so thin that you can’t put good speakers on the TV. He says Samsung believes that in such cases it’s best to use external speakers… read more

Samsung 55" Super OLED TV to come to the UK "in the spring"
Feb 14th
CNet reports that Samsung told them that they can expect the 55″ Super OLED TV (The KN55ES9000 ) to be launched in the UK around the Spring of 2012. That means around March or April 2012, which is actually good news (at CES Samsung said that the TV will launch in Q2 or Q2 2012 ). We’ll probably have to wait for the actual launch to hear the price in the UK. In any case, Samsung’s TV has a 55″ Direct Emission OLED panel that supports active-shutter 3D and Samsung’s Smart TV and Smart-Interaction technologies. It includes a camera can can be controlled via a remote control, voice control, motion control and face recognition. read more

Lux compares display developers for technical value and business execution
Feb 7th
Lux Research posted an interesting grid that shows how different display developers rate on technical value and business execution. It includes mature technologies (such as OLED and e-paper ) and emerging technologies such as electrochromic and electrofluidic displays. Lux says that OLED materials and equipment developers have a clear head start over other technologies, with notable players such as UDC , CDT , Novaled and Kateeva . The company that stands out in both technical value and business execution is E Ink – with high score in technology and IP and strong partnerships and management team. E Ink is the only company that scores a “strong positive” – with their nearly 100% market share of the electrophoretic market – which is used in products such as Amazon’s Kindle and B&N Nook e-readers. read more
