MIT’s OLED Display Blocks use six 128×128 PMOLEDs for a 360-degree perspective

MIT’s Media Lab unveiled a new project called the OLED Display Blocks that uses a six-sided “cube” to provide a 360-degree perspective. The current prototype uses six 1.25″ 128×128 PMOLED panels, but in the future larger cubes can be made. MIT’s envisions all sorts of applications for such cubes: visualizing data with different parameters shown in each side, collaborating, showing movies with interweaving stories simultaneously and more:

Sony to buy OLED TV panels from Samsung?

The Korea Herald reports that Sony is in talks with Samsung to purchase OLED TV panels. Sony wants to launch their OLED TVs in 2013 and officials from both companies have met last week to work out the pricing and supply volume. Samsung’s Super OLED TV technology uses direct emission OLEDs (as opposed to LG Display’s white subpixels with color filters architecture ) and an LTPS backplane. The first Samsung Super OLED TV will be 55″ in size and feature Smart TV and Smart-Interaction technologies. Samsung still wouldn’t reveal the model number officially, but it seems that it will be called KN55ES9000 , price or release date, although they do promise it will ship by Q2 or Q3 2012. read more

LG Display opened a new display R&D center in Paju, Korea

LG Display announced today that they opened a new R&D center that will focus on next-generation display panels (including OLED and panels) in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. The center resides in a 15-story building and LGD hopes that bringing together researchers and developers from all over the country to one place will bring more synergy and accelerate development. Paju is also hosts LGD’s 8.5-Gen OLED TV fab , and the company’s flexible OLED R&D line . The center will host around 2,500 workers – and relocation will complete by May 2012. The center will by a “mecca of high-tech display technologies such as OLED, e-paper and ultra-high resolution AH-IPS displays “. read more

Samsung to reveal OLED TV price and full-spec at IFA 2012

Samsung Electronics’s EU marketing director, Michael Zoelle said in a press conference that Samsung plans to launch their OLED TVs in IFA 2012 – in August 31. He also said that the TVs will be launched in 2Q 2012 at earliest, which is actually sooner – which probably means that Samsung is still not sure when it’ll start shipments. Michael says that during the IFA Samsung will disclose the OLED TV’s price, spec and product line. The company will also exhibit new TVs with “totally-new designs and concepts” as well as “totally-new premium TVs”. read more

Reports: TPVision to launch OLED TVs in 2012, use LGD panels

There are reports that TPVision will launch OLED TVs in 2012, and will present the first sets at the IFA fair in August. TPVision will buy OLED panels from LG Display. This report confirms earlier report from February . We do know that LG Display reported that several clients are interested in its OLED panels (some suggest that Sony is one of them ). TPVision is the TV joint-venture between Philips and TPV, now owned by TPV Technology. TPVision uses the “Philips” brand for its televisions. read more

The Fraunhofer IPMS is showing several new OLED lamp designs at the L+B 2012 show. The most interesting lamp is the OBranch one which uses new transparent OLED panels made at COMEDD . Panasonic’s ELeaf OLED technology on video

Panasonic released a nice video from L+B 2012, showing their LED and OLED technologies. Panasonic is now using the ELeaf brand for their OLED panels. The OLED part starts at 1:34 on the video below: Panasonic Idemitsu OLED Lighting (PIOL), a joint-venture between Panasonic Electric Works (PEW) and Idemitsu Kosan is already shipping OLED panel samples . A short while ago PEW announced that they developed the world’s most efficient OLED modules (128 lm/W).

Tridonic unveil six OLED lamps powered by their modules

Tridonic sent us a brochure showing six new OLED lamps, all powered by their module. One of these is the Manta Rehi, the kinetic OLED luminaire we already reported about . Ledon (the company behind the Tridonic brand) uses Osram Orbeos panels and LG Chem panels . They wouldn’t reveal which panels are used in which lamps. read more
