MBraun releases three videos introducing their OLED processing equipment
Jul 21st
MBraun released three nice videos showing their OLED processing equipment. The first one shows the UV-03 Cleaner – for the cleaning and activation of glass substrates or other optical surfaces using a simultaneous application of UV light and oxygen. This tool is used in both the coating and the encapsulation processes: The second video shows the Vacuum Hotplate – used for both basic research and manufacturing. The combination of vacuum and heat transfer allows curing at modest conditions, addressing the sensitivity of organic materials to elevated temperatures: read more

OPV powered flashlight – on hands review
Jul 19th
The Organic Electronics Association (OEA) recently released their latest OE brochure , to which they attached a very cool demonstrator – an organic solar cell (PV) powered flashlight: What feels like a bit of cardboard actually contains a a roll-to-roll printed organic solar cell, a flexible lithium-ion battery and a printed electronic circuitry. And of course a small white LED. The association says that this can “give you the feeling” of the next generation of electronics: thin, lightweight, flexible and produced at a low cost. read more

Is Samsung working on a 5.3" Super AMOLED Plus phone?
Jul 19th
There are reports that Samsung is working on a new device called the Galaxy Q that will bridge the gap between the smartphone and the small tablet. It will have a Super AMOLED Plus 5.3″ display. The Q will come in two versions: 3G and LTE, and will launch in September during the IFA 2011 exhibition in Germany . A 7-inch Super AMOLED prototype Achieving an HD (720p) display on a 5.3″ screen requires around 270ppi – which means that Samsung will not be able to offer that resolution using their current technology (which limits AMOLEDs to around 200ppi ). So this is probably not the rumored Super AMOLED HD display . read more

Black Eyed Pea Fergie goes on stage with an OLED outfit
Jun 29th
American hip-hop group Black Eyed Peas went on stage on Paris on three shows, wearing clothes embroidered with LEDs and OLED lighting panels from Philips. Fergie had a ‘leather cat woman’ outfit that has 75 white Lumiblade OLED panels. The panels were controlled remotely – and were synchronized to the music and lighting sequences. Philips’ OLED panels (Lumiblades) were the first to be released back in 2009. Philips’ panels come in different sizes, shapes and colors, not just white squares. Check out our hands-on review of the Lumiblade OLED lighting panels . read more

Google working on a new Android 4 phone, to sport a Super AMOLED HD display?
Jun 28th
Reports start to emerge about an upcoming Google phone that will be the first one to use their Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) OS. Interestingly, these report say that the display will be a “Super AMOLED HD” (that’s the first time we heard that description). Some say that this large display will support 720p HD video (1280×720). This is a very high resolution for a mobile phone – perhaps there is some mix-up between this device and a new tablet from Google? Google Nexus S If Google are indeed working on a new phone or tablet device, surely more details will emerge, and we’ll keep you updated on that mysterious Super AMOLED HD display! read more

Imerj and Frog show an Android phone prototype with two 4" WVGA AMOLED displays
Jun 24th
Imerj and Frog has unveiled a new Android phone (or is it a mini-tablet) prototype that has two 4″ WVGA AMOLED displays. When closed it’s just like a regular phone (although quite thick), and when open you get a 6″ 800×960 tablet – although the displays are separated by a few millimeters. In the ‘open’ mode the device is rather thin – just 7mm. This is just a prototype – but the companies say it’s a few months from production. The specs of this unnamed prototype: a dual-core TI OMAP processor, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage (there will be more models, up to 128GB!), micro SD card, Android, 5Mp camera (720p video). Here’s a promotional video showing the new upcoming device: read more

Jun 14th
Remember Mitsubishi’s Geo-Cosmos 6-meter PMOLED globe ? The company installed this at the Tokyo Science Museum and now they published a beautiful video showing it: The Geo-Cosmos is a spherical Diamond Vision OLED - which means that it’s made out of small PMOLED modules. In fact it uses 10,362 panels (!) – each 96x96mm in size – total resolution is more than 10 million pixels. Each module has 32×32 resolution – and it’s made out of 4 smaller sub-modules.
