LG Display starts building a pilot 3.5-Gen fab for flexible OLED displays
Jan 31st
There are reports that LG Display decided to built a pilot 3.5-Gen (730 × 460 mm) flexible OLED production line. They have ordered the equipment, which will arrive by 3Q 2012, and the line will become active by the end of 2012. An official from LGD is quoted saying that it will take 1-2 years to develop and verify the process and produce prototypes. The company hasn’t decided on a production schedule yet. LG Display’s flexible OLEDs will use the same technology as Samsung’s flexible prototypes – a polymide coated substrate and direct-emission RGB sub-pixels (as opposed to LG’s OLED TV which use WOLED with color filters ). read more

LG Display to start making OLED TV panels in July, capacity will be 48,000 units a month
Jan 27th
LG Display says that they will begin production in their 8.5-Gen plant in July, making 8,000 monthly substrates – or about 48,000 55″ OLED TV panels. It’s possible that this assumes 100% yield – and in any case this is more panels then planned . LG plans to invest 4 trillion Won (around $3.5 billion) in OLED production this year, and plans for 2013 will only be made during in the third quarter – LG wants to see the market reaction. LG’s 55EM9600 is a 55″ Full-HD OLED TV featuring 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio and fast response time (1,000 times faster than LCD according to LG). The panel is only 4mm thick, and the whole TV weighs just 7.5Kg. The TV is based on LG Display’s Oxide-TFT white-OLED with color filters (RGBW) OLED panel. read more

LG plans to sell 200,000-300,000 OLED TVs in 2012, 2 million in 2013
Jan 11th
LG says that they plan to sell 200,000 to 300,000 OLED TVs in 2012, and up to 2 million in 2013. This is actually quite an aggressive target. LG’s 55EM9600 55″ OLED TV won’t be available until May 2012 at the earliest – which means that LG will need to have a capacity of around 37,000 monthly panels – which isn’t likely with their current 8.5-Gen line as LG themselves said that at 100% yield the capacity will only be 30,000 panels a month . If LG Display actually plans to produce 2 million panels in 2013, they’ll need to start working on a new mass production plant now… read more

DisplaySearch: OLED to grow from 4% of the FPD industry in 2011 to 16% in 2018 ($20 billion in revenue)
Jan 10th
DisplaySearch says that OLED displays are estimated to take around 4% of the total flat panel display (FPD) industry in 2011, and this will grow to around 16% in 2018. Revenue wise, OLEDs will grow from over $4 billion in 2011 to over $20 billion in 2018. A few weeks ago DisplaySearch said that AMOLED display revenue will reach $3.36 billion in 2011 – which means that they forecast around $700 million in PMOLED revenue. The company also says that OLED lighting is gaining momentum, and will reach $6 billion in revenue by 2018. read more

Sony to launch consumer OLED TVs within 3-4 years?
Nov 22nd
According to Sony Gulf managing director Osamu Miura, the company plans to launch consumer OLED TVs within 3-4 years. It’s been a while since we heard any Sony executive discuss OLED TV plans. The company is also working towards glasses-free 3D TVs and 4K technology products – which will also be introduced within the next 4 years. Back in CES 2011, Sony has unveiled a new OLED TV prototype – a 24.5″ panel that supports glasses-free 3D . It was reported that this Sony will launch this product for the professional broadcasting market in 2011, which didn’t happen (although Sony does offer 24.5″ 2D OLEDs for this market ). read more

Analyst: Apple and Sharp to jointly develop iPhone and iPad OLED panels within 1-2 years
Nov 22nd
Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies says that he believes that Apple decided to buy iPad 3, iPhone 5 and TV display panels from Sharp. At first these will be IGZO based LCDs – which will be brighter, clearer, thinner and more efficient than existing LCDs. But Misek also believes that Sharp and Apple will jointly develop OLED displays (probably IGZO based as well) within 1-2 years which will be used in future iPhone and iPad generations. OLED TV panels aren’t expected until 2015. Misek says that the two companies are working towards a new printing technology for producing these small/medium OLED panels – and that a pilot line will be in place by middle 2012 for testing purposes. Full production will be possible in 2013. The new technology, according to Misek, is a combination of inkjet printing and a daisy wheel. The daisy wheel is an impact printing technology and I’m not sure how it relates to OLEDs. read more

Japan Display to convert a 6-Gen LTPS fab to AMOLED?
Nov 20th
Last week we reported that Japan Display (the new small/medium display maker that merged Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba’s businesses ) may consider to accelerate OLED mass production in a $2.7 billion investment in R&D and production . JD also bought Panasonic’s Mobara 6-Gen a-Si LCD plant. Today we hear reports that JD will convert the new plant to LTPS, and will later use this plant to produce AMOLED displays . It seems that those plans aren’t final, but JD’s CEO said that the company could start mass producing OLEDs by 2013. If JD does decide to convert that 6-Gen plant to AMOLED production, this will be the largest AMOLED plant currently planned for small/medium panels ( Samsung and LG are both building 8-Gen plants , but these will be used for OLED TV panels). read more

Japan Display to accelerate OLED mass production
Nov 15th
There are reports that Japan Display (the new small/medium display maker that merged Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba’s businesses ) plans to accelerate OLED mass production. They plan to invest $1.3 billion in OLED R&D (which probably includes pilot production plants), and later on invest a further $1.4 billion towards mass production. We don’t know when they actually plan to start producing panels. Back in September, when Japan Display was just formed, representatives from Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba said that they certainly consider OLEDs to be the ‘core technology’ of the next generation small size and medium size displays , and will invest in OLED R&D. It’s good to hear that now they are accelerating those plans. read more

Samsung to delay expansion in their AMOLED fab?
Oct 18th
There are reports from Korea that Samsung Mobile Display may delay their 5.5-Gen AMOLED fab expansion. The reports claim that SMD already postponed equipment orders for the third phase, and they will also delay expansion of the second line. Samsung’s original plans were to finish all three stages by the end of 2011. This was later delayed – the second line towards the end of 2011, and third line at the first half of 2012. read more

New report released on Korea and Taiwan’s OLED industry
Sep 19th
Korea Investment & Securities produced an interesting investment report about the Korean and Taiwanese AMOLED industry. They focus on material and equipment suppliers. Basically they say that large OLED panels will be produced soon (by 2013 or 2014 at the latest) by both Samsung and LG, and they try to identify which companies will benefit from this OLED market expansion. They say that both LG and Samsung will eventually convert their lines to Oxide-TFTs. Strangely they do not even mention Univesral Display and Novaled – which are both major material suppliers to Samsung and LG – even though they do list a lot of “foreign” material suppliers such as Dow Chemical, Idemitsu Kosan, Merck and even Kodak (which is no longer into OLEDs…). In their analysis for Duksan, for example, they do not mention the fact that the green material is now supplied by Universal – which should reduce the company’s revenue from OLEDs… So we do not vouch for this report… read more
