New white top-emitting OLED architecture achieves high efficiency and outstanding color quality
Dec 24th
Researchers from Dresden’s University of Technology (TU Dresden) developed new highly efficient white top-emitting OLED design that feature “outstanding” color quality, and is compatible with flexible OLEDs. In this new design a refractive index matched microlens film was laminated to the top-emitting OLED to form direct optical contact. This enabled the researchers to achieve a CRI of 93, CIE coordinates of (0.472, 0.430) and an emission from 410 to 750 nm that almost spans the complete visible spectrum (380 to 780 nm). The efficiency is up to 30 lm/W (on par with the latest record white OLEDs from Novaled and OSRAM ). The lamination of such an outcoupling structure should be fully roll-to-roll compatible and even allows to be used as an encapsulation film when water and oxygen barriers are added. read more

OLED researchers win the German Future Prize
Dec 18th
The Federal President of Germany Christian Wulff awarded the German Future Prize (Deutscher Zukunftspreis) 2011 to three organic electronics researchers: Prof. Karl Leo from Technical University of Dresden and Fraunhofer IPMS – COMEDD , Dr. Jan Blochwitz-Nimoth from Novaled and Dr. Martin Pfeiffer from Heliatek. Both Heliatek and Novaled are spinoffs from TU Dresden. The German Future Prize is worth 250,000 euro and is Germany’s most prestigious award for science and innovation. Congratulations guys!

Video interview with Novaled’s CFO, says they sell materials to Samsung, reached over €11 million in revenues in 2010
Mar 11th
Yesterday we posted Ecosummit TV’s video interview with Novaled’s co-founder and chief scientist , and today we found another great interview, this time with Harry Boehme, Novaled ‘s CFO. Harry confirms that the company had& €11.2 million in revenues in 2010. He also reveals that Novaled are selling materials to a large OLED display maker in Asia – which is Samsung (while not saying this specifically due to NDA, harry admits that they are selling to the ‘only AMOLED maker’). Harry also discusses Novaled’s technology and markets (they target OLED displays, OLED lighting and organic PV) and estimates that OLEDs will have a 20% share in the flat-panel display market within 5 years. The interview also includes a short visit to Novaled’s chemistry lab with with Dr. Mike Zoellner, a project leader. read more

Video interview with Novaled’s chief scientist
Mar 9th
Ecosummit TV posted a nice interview with Dr. Jan Blochwitz-Nimoth, Novaled ‘s co-founder and chief scientist. Jan discusses the company’s business, technology, OLED doping and other interesting topics. In the video description in YouTube they say that Novaled had €11 million in revenues in 2010. The company reported around $8 million in revenue in 2008, so this makes sense. We posted our own interview with Gerd Guenther, Novaled’s marketing chief a couple of months ago .

Novaled to remain in the IP & Material business, OLED displays
Jul 13th
Last week we reported that Novaled is set to become an OLED Lighting manufacturer , moving away from the display business (the original post came from OLEDNet). Today Novaled tells us that in fact this is not true. Novaled’s core business remains their technology licensing and material sales (the materials are made by BASF). They are also acting very successfully in the display field and have very good relationships with Korean manufacturers. So this sets things straight…

Novaled demonstrates OLEDs on metal substrates
Apr 30th
Novaled is demonstrating OLEDs made on metal (steel) substrates that are only 0.7mm thick. Those substrates require specific top-emitting OLED structures, and Novaled has developed dedicated ITO-free OLEDs that has a similar performance to standard bottom-emission OLEDs. Novaled is also working on thin-film encapsulation that will enable flexible OLEDs. Novaled say that metal substrates has several advantages: they will enable flexibility, they have good hear conduction properties, and the “open the roadmap” towards low-cost roll-to-roll production. They also look great and are very robust.

Finetech 2010 focus on LED and OLED lighting
Apr 15th
The Finetech 2010 14.04-16.04.2010 event in Japan is focused on the OLED and LED technology. Rohm is showing an bendable OLED lighting product with a thinness of only 0.3mm, while Novaled’s OLED panel boasts a transparency of 60-70%. The Novaled OLED panel can serve as a window to let sunlight in during the day, and then turn into a light source in the night. This is the same panel which Novaled showed at the light and building in Frankfurt. Novaled and Willing show OLED emergency light
Apr 11th
Novaled and Willing are showing a new OLED emergency light. The size is 3cm by 10cm, and it’s only a few millimeters thick. They say that while it reaches all the standard and regulations that are required, it’s still too expensive to be sold commercially. It’s exactly one year since Kenwood has unveiled similar OLED emergency lights that also double as speakers.
