Samsung to release a phone with the 3.3" touch-enabled AMOLED display
Feb 8th
Samsung is said to unveil the first phone to use their new 3.3" touch-enabled AMOLED displays announced last week . Those displays (which Samsung calls "super AMOLED") have a 480×800 resolution, with a touch-sensor over the mirror display. The thickness of the touch sensor is just 0.001mm. Samsung claims that these displays are five-times more clear or vivid, and perform 20% better when used outdoors. Perhaps this is the same technology as used in their upcoming GT-8500 , which is said to have a special ‘anti-reflective OLED’ . Via KoreaTimes and JKNews

Graphene is used to create an alternative to OLED Lighting
Feb 6th
Researchers from Sweden and the US have produced a new transparent lighting component that is made from Graphene . They say it is cheap to make and fully recyclable, and might be an alternative to OLED Lighting . The new device is called an Organic Light-emitting Electrochemical Cell, or LEC. The Graphene is used for an electrode. LECs can be made using a roll-to-roll process, because all of its parts can be made from liquid solutions. There’s very little info on that new device (such as what is the actual light-emitting material, what’s the efficiency of it, etc.). Via Graphene-Info

The new material Graphene promise cheaper full recyclable printable lighting sheets
Feb 6th
Swedish and US researchers have developed a new lighting technology that could lead to innovations like illuminated wallpaper made entirely of plastic and cheaper, more easily recycled electronic devices. This new super material is called: graphene . Organic light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC) . It is inexpensive to produce, and the transparent electrode is made of the carbon material graphene. read more

Samsung’s new phone has an anti-reflective OLED display for outdoor use
Feb 2nd
Samsung has a new phone, the GT-8500 . It’s the first phone that has Bluetooth 3.0. But that’s not the most interesting bit – it has a 3.1" touch OLED that Samsung say is "anti-reflective" and thus suitable for outdoor use. It’ll be interesting to see how it behaves in direct sun, and to hear what exactly makes it anti-reflective… OLEDs has been said to have poor sunlight visibility , although newer OLEDs are reportedly better. Will 3D TV be the killer-app for OLEDs?
Jan 31st
So 2010 is here, and we’re still waiting for a real commercial OLED TV . While OLEDs are advancing quickly in smart phones and digital cameras , it seems that no one is willing to commit to large panels – OLEDs are still very expensive to make. Another problem facing OLED TVs is LCDs – in the past few years LCDs have gotten thinner, cheaper, more efficient and they look better. One area in which LCDs do not shine, though is 3D . This was the hot topic at CES – many companies (including Sony, Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Toshiba and more) have shown their 3D Displays , and announced future models. However it seems that LCDs are not so good for 3D viewing. In fact Plasma (and OLED) TVs are much better . LCDs has problems with fast switching of photos, and there’s "crossover" between the left and right image ( more information on 3D TVs here ). OLEDs is even faster and better than Plasma, and is said to be the best way to view 3D. Both Sony and Samsung have unveiled new OLED 3D TV prototypes in CES. Sony 24.5-inch 3D OLED prototype If consumers will actually be interested in 3D TVs at home (nobody is sure about that yet…) than this might be great chance for OLED TVs
