Novaled to show new transparent OLED based lamps
Apr 13th
Novaled announced that they will be showing new OLED luminaries at the L+B 2012 show next week. They will be showing three new luminaries: a suspension light (“Linfinity“), a wall light (“Lucentury”) and a floor light (“Trinity”). These lamps include transparent OLEDs and are made from high-end, lightweight, stable and indestructible carbon fiber. Novaled will also show the Victory lamp in a wide range of colors. Novaled also revealed a new lamp design called the PAD (named after the pad-like fingers of the red-eyed tree frog) – shown above. Here three transparent white OLED panels are used, but interestingly, when the panels are turned off, each will filter the ambient light to be in a different color (see on the right image above). The PAD was designed by Marcus Tremonto. read more

Japan Display to start producing OLED panels by March 2013
Apr 3rd
Japan Display (the new small/medium display maker that merged Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba’s businesses ) announced that it plans to start mass producing OLED displays for smartphones. First panel samples are expected by March 2013. In order to have an edge over Samsung, JD aims to achieve over 300 ppi and develop panels that are more efficient than Samsung’s OLEDs. Analysts suggest that JD will try to secure Apple as a customer for their OLED panels. Back in November there were reports that JD plans to accelerate OLED mass production with a $1.3 billion investment in OLED R&D (which probably includes pilot production plants), and later on invest a further $1.4 billion towards mass production. It was suggested that JD may convert their Mobara LCD plant (bought from Panasonic) to LTPS and later to AMOLED production . read more

Samsung Electronics considers taking over SMD
Feb 7th
In a filing to the Korean Stock Exchange, Samsung Electronics announced it is considering taking over Samsung Mobile Display . Currently Samsung Electronics holds 64.4% in SMD (the rest is held by Samsung SDI). SMD is Samsung’s OLED unit, and they produce over 90% of the world’s AMOLED displays. Samsung Electronics says that this move will improve the synergy within the group. But this can be bad news for other companies who rely on SMD’s AMOLED panels, as perhaps the will not want to keep the best displays for their own devices. read more

What’s behind Nokia’s ClearBlack display technology?
Feb 5th
Nokia’s ClearBlack Display technology has been announced in September 2010, and Nokia is using it in several phones (including the Lumia 900 , Lumia 800 and older Symbian models such as the X7 and E7 ). We know that it includes polarizing filters to block incoming light. Today however Nokia finally revealed how it actually works: A CBD filter includes both a linear polariser and retardation layers between the surface of your phone and the display. When light hits your screen, this is what happens: read more
