Nokia’s ClearBlack Display technology has been announced in September 2010, and Nokia is using it in several phones (including the Lumia 900 , Lumia 800 and older Symbian models such as the X7 and E7 ). We know that it includes polarizing filters to block incoming light. Samsung – over 5 million Galaxy S II phones sold in South Korea, 25% of Koreans use this phone!

Samsung announced that they sold over 5 million Galaxy S II phones in South Korea. This is the first time a single phone model reached that number in Korea. Samsung calls the S II Korea’s “national phone” – and it makes sense as 25% of phone owners in Korea (about 20 million) use it! Samsung’s Galaxy S2 is the successor to the popular Galaxy S . It has a 4.3″ WVGA Super AMOLED plus display, 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, NFC, Bluetooth 3 and HSPA+. It’s only 8.49mm thick at its thinnest point. read more

CES 2012 – praise for Samsung’s and LG’s OLED TVs

So, OLED was the most discussed tech trend on CES . But the OLED TVs also got a lot of praise from reviewers and consumers – who were amazed to see the panel’s thinness, the contrast, the colors and the fast refresh rates. In short – the image on Samsung’s and LG’s OLED TVs is amazing! Samsung Super OLED TV CNET gave LG’s OLED TV the “Best of CES” award: “The winning LG measures just 4mm in depth…and boasts a bezel around the screen just 1mm wide. It’s basically all gorgeous picture… CES is a TV-centric show, OLED is potentially the best TV technology ever, and CNET editors agreed that 2012 would be the year of the organic diode”. CNET actually says that it’s hard to say which is the better OLED TV – the Samsung or the LG one, but LG seems to be more of a finished product, so they gave the award to LG. read more

Sharp does not have any plans to join the OLED market

Sharp’s president Mikio Katayama said that his company does not have plans to join the OLED market. He estimates that OLEDs won’t create a new market, it will just be a replacement for existing technologies. Currently OLEDs will be too expensive – and he does not think customers will pay the premium. Three years ago, Sharp made basically the same comments about OLEDs . It’s quite a big bet by the Japanese company – as most leading TV makers have active OLED TV programs. read more

DisplaySearch: OLED to grow from 4% of the FPD industry in 2011 to 16% in 2018 ($20 billion in revenue)

DisplaySearch says that OLED displays are estimated to take around 4% of the total flat panel display (FPD) industry in 2011, and this will grow to around 16% in 2018. Revenue wise, OLEDs will grow from over $4 billion in 2011 to over $20 billion in 2018. A few weeks ago DisplaySearch said that AMOLED display revenue will reach $3.36 billion in 2011 – which means that they forecast around $700 million in PMOLED revenue. The company also says that OLED lighting is gaining momentum, and will reach $6 billion in revenue by 2018. read more

Sensics’ Natalia is a smart head-tracking 3D goggles headset with 2 eMagin -made SXGA (1280×1024) OLED microdisplays. The Natalia runs on Android (v4.0) and has a dual-core 1.2Ghz CPU, 1GB of memory, Wi-Fi and an SD card slot. It runs Sensic’s own SmartGoggles software which can be extended via the libSensics API. The headset can do 360-degrees head tracking, supports hand tracking for immersive augmented reality interface and can run off batteries. Sensics hopes to launch the Natalia towards the end of 2012, no pricing information yet. Sony quits the consumer OLED TV market, not really news

The Daily Yomiuri posted an article stating that Sony has quit the consumer OLED TV market. The company will continue to produce OLED monitors for the professional/corporate market. This news was reported by a lot of online blogs and sites. Sony XEL-1 But it’s hardly surprising – and it isn’t really news… Sony’s only OLED TV, the XEL-1 was discontinued back in February 2010 . And Sony said several times that it is currently focusing on the professional market, with products such as the 24.5″ BVM-F250 broadcasting monitor . Sony still has an active OLED research program. Sony is also one of the founders of Japan Display , a new small/medium display maker.

DisplaySearch: 2011 AMOLED revenue up 169% to $3.36 billion

DisplaySearch estimates that AMOLED revenue in 2011 reached $3.36 billion on 90 million units. Revenue grew by 169% (from $1.25 in 2010) and unit shipments grew 97%. Revenue grew faster then units because the average smartphone display is getting larger. According to DisplaySearch, AMOLED share of the small/medium display market is now 12% (up 6% in 2010). These numbers are actually lower than what DisplaySearch estimated back in August 2011 . Back then they said unit shipments will be 128 million and revenue will reach $4 billion. read more

Amtran considers OLED TV production, waits to see market’s reaction to LG

Digitimes reports that Amtran Technologie’s CEO says that the company is interested to see the market response to LG’s 55″ OLED TV . Amtran does not rule out the possibility of producing OLED TVs. Amtran is actually an OEM monitor display producer (they supply LCD monitors to Apple) – and are focused on 23″ and 27″ monitors. It may be that the actually mean to start producing OLED monitors and not OLED TVs. read more

Samsung adds a new 7" AMOLED product

Samsung added a new AMOLED product to their web site – a 7″ WSVGA (600×1024) AMOLED display, aimed towards tablets. Interestingly this new panel is quite bright – 400 nits. The 7.7″ AMOLED (used in the upcoming Tab 7.7 ) is only 250 nits bright. We do not know of any product that uses this display yet – the first one will probably be a Samsung made tablet. Or perhaps this will be used in Google’s rumored high-end Tablet ? Hopefully one of these will be revealed in CES 2012 soon… read more
