Idemitsu Kosan and LG Chem announced a new collaboration agreement that will allow both companies to use each other OLED material-related patents in certain areas. Idemitsu and LG Chem hope that this collaboration and patent sharing agreement will accelerate the development of new high-performance OLED materials. Through this cooperative arrangement, both companies will strongly support the OLED business of LG Display – but will also offer the outcome of this collaboration to other display companies. Apple to invest in LG Display’s OLED business to secure capacity?

The Korea Herald reports that Apple is in talks with LG Display to invest 2-3 trillion Won ($1.7-$2.6 billion USD) in LG’s OLED production lines, in order to exclusively reserve some of LG’s flexible OLED capacity. The report says that the two firms already agreed on these investment plans, but the details (which includes the investment size and timing) have not been finalized yet. A couple of month ago we heard reports (originating from another Korean news outlet, Business Korea) that LGD is in talks with Apple. LGD to soon decide whether to construct a Gen-5 OLED lighting fab

In October 2015, LG Chem announced that it has sold its OLED lighting business to LG Display , for $135 million USD, and the deal was finalized towards the end of 2015. LG decided to consolidate all OLED production under LG Display – which will hopefully enable LG to advance OLED lighting more quickly – and at a lower cost. LG Chem has been discussing a Gen-5 OLED lighting production line since 2012, and the before the merger the company had plans to construct a new $185 million production line for OLED lighting by 2017 . OLED lighting meets 3D printing in the new LG Chem video

LG Chem collaborated with Korean 3D printer maker 3D-Box to show how easy it is to produce an OLED lamp with 3D printing: LG Chem is one of the world’s OLED lighting leaders and is producing several OLED panels including the world’s first truly-bendable panels – only a few weeks ago they announced 406×60 mm plastic-based bendable panels . Last month LG Display announced it acquired LG Chem’s OLED lighting unit for $142 million in a bid to consolidate LG’s OLED technologies and manufacturing capabilities. LG Chem announced that it has sold its OLED lighting business to LG Display, for 160 billion Won (a little over $142 million USD). LG decided that LG Display will be in charge of all OLED-based products while LG chem will focus on high-end materials (including OLED materials) and batteries. The idea is that consolidating the OLED production of both displays and lighting in the same company will enable LG to advance OLED lighting more quickly – and at a lower cost. LG Chem is developing and producing OLED lighting panels, including the world’s first truly-bendable panels (a few days ago they announced 406×60 mm plastic-based bendable panels ), and is one of the clear leaders in the OLED lighting industry. LG launches 400×50 mm flexible OLED lighting panels

LG Chem launched a new flexible OLED lighting panel sized 406×50 mm – more than twice the size of their current flexible panel (which is 200×50 mm). The new plastic-based panel model number is P6SD, and it is only 0.41 mm thick. The P6SD offers 20,000 hours of lifetime, efficiency of 50 lm/W and a CRI of 85. Blackbody introduces a new OLED installation using LG Chem’s panels

BlackBody introduced a new OLED lighting installation called the Dispertion at the London Design Festival. The Dispertion, designed by Thierry Gaugain uses 550 square OLEDs in addition to some round OLED: The most interesting thing here is that the 100×100 mm square OLED panels were actually provided by LG Chem . LGD in discussions to acquire Global OLED Technology

According to the Korea Times, LG Display is in talks to acquire Global OLED Technology (GOT), the IP holdings company that owns over 2,000 OLED related patents originally created by Kodak. GOT was formed in 2009 following LG’s $100 million purchase of Kodak’s OLED business unit . LG Display already owns 65% of GOT, with the rest being owned by Idemitsu Kosan (33%) and LG Chem (2%). LG Chem plans to build a $185 million Gen-5 OLED lighting fab by 2017

According to reports from Japan, LG Chem is planning to construct a new production line for OLED lighting by 2017. According to the reports, LG Chem will commit 200 billion Korean Won ($185 million) towards this new fab, which will increase its production capacity and will lower prices dramatically. LG Chem started discussing the Gen-5 line back in 2012 (and the plan was to build it by 2015 ), but hopefully this time the company will actually execute the expansion plan. The OLED Association says that LG Chem has seen great advances in panel performance, cost reduction, production yields and in-house material adoption, and the company executives believes now is the time to increase capacity and finally start mass producing OLED panels.
