LG Display showcase in July 2014 a new 18 inch transparent OLED DIsplay prototype. This new display boasts 30 percent transmittance, this goal can be reached with the companys transparent pixel design technology. The korean company has successfully lowered the haze of the panel which is generated by using circuit devices and film components to a level of 2 percent. With this new development, the company has been able to improve greatly the technology level of the transparent display. If you compare this to existing transparent LCD Displays, the new OLED panel offers significantly improved transmittance. The goal is to introduce a Ultra HD flexible, transparent OLED-Display with more of 60 inch, which have a transmittance of more than 40 percent and a curvature radius of 100R. Now we have more informations for you from the LG-Display development team Lee Bu-Yeol and Kim Bin Senior Research Engineer! What is an 18-inches transparent OLED display product? Lee Bu-Yeol Senior Research Engineer: The existing transparent display was built based on LCD. However, there have been many restrictions to ensure the transparency because LCD requires a polarizing plate and backlight.
Samsung seems to have taken exception to a little sidenote made by Steve Jobs during his iPhone 4 announcement at WWDC10 this Monday. While waxing poetic on the virtues of IPS , Jobs let us know that he considers it an entirely superior display technology to OLED, and now the world’s biggest display maker has a few words to say about it. According to a Samsung spokesperson, the high-res retina display on the iPhone 4 offers only a 3 to 5 percent advantage in sharpness over its own Galaxy S Super AMOLED screen, but sucks down a wasteful 30 percent more power. Moreover, Samsung believes its screens offer better viewing angles and contrast, and concludes by saying that “structurally, IPS LCD technology cannot catch up with AM-OLED display technology.” And here we thought Samsung and Apple were getting along so well . Is your LCD TV not fulfilling your primordial need for contrast, more contrast ? If so, you could do worse than to check out these so-called polarizer plates from Zeon, which promise up to ten times better contrast ratios than current LCD tech. The Japanese company’s latest wares are compatible with IPS panels (yay!) and it even has a version for OLEDs on tap, though we hardly think weak contrast is the problem with OLED displays right now. Still, the expansion of viewing angles is always welcome, so let’s hope the projected mass production by the middle of this year materializes, so that we can all be talking about awesome new displays come CES 2011. Onwards and upwards.
