Taiwan’s government wants to help AUO and CMI shift to OLED production

Taiwan’s Minister of Economic Affairs (MOEA) Shih Yen-shiang says that the local display makers need to work together to deal with weak consumer demand and rising competition. Shih especially wants to help Taiwan’s largest display makers – AUO and Chimei Innolux. The MOEA is already in talks with the two companies to help them shift towards OLED production. The government wants to invest money from its National Development Fund (NDF). AUO transparent OLED prototype Back in August it was reported that Taiwan’s government wants to establish an AMOLED R&D alliance and that AU Optronics (AUO) has volunteered for the plan. AUO was facing technical issues which forced them to delay OLED production , but now the company is already shipping 4″ AMOLED samples and mass production will begin in Q2 2012 . CMI is facing both technical and financial problems and their OLED plans aren’t clear . read more

DisplayBank: the OLED market will grow to $12.8 billion by 2015

Korean research firm DisplayBank says that the AMOLED market will grow from about $1.4 billion in 2010 to $12.8 billion in 2015. The growth will be led by small and medium AMOLED panels – and production technology will become more stable. OLED TV shipments, starting in 2012 , will also help the market exhibit fast growth rates. Back in April, DisplaySearch predicted that AMOLED for mobile phones sales will reach around $10 billion in 2015 (that’s without the tablet, laptop, monitor and TV markets). iSupply meanwhile are much less optimistic – they estimate that the total AMOLED market will reach $3.6 billion in sales in 2015 . read more

Samsung to invest $4.8 billion on OLEDs in 2011

Samsung announced a massive 43.1 trillion won ($38.3 billion) investment plan for 2011 – $26.5 billion will go into new plants and the rest will go into R&D. Samsung says that they will invest 5.4 trillion won ($4.8 billion) on OLED factories this year. We already know that Samsung is committed to a $2.2 billion 5.5-Gen AMOLED plant which will go online in July 2011, but now Samsung announced further investments in 2011. A couple of months ago there were reports that Samsung plans a Gen-8 pilot line for OLED TVs that will produce 4000 55″ OLED TVs monthly. Perhaps Samsung will indeed build this plant during 2011. read more

UDC announces their 2Q 2010 financial reports

Universal Display reported their financial results for the last quarter. Revenues were $8.4 million, compared to $2.9 a year ago. Most of the rise is attributed to development contracts and the sale of development materials. UDC reported a net loss of $4.4 million. Operating loss was reduced to $1.9 million (down from $6.3 a year ago). Sidney D. Rosenblatt, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Universal Display said: “Demand for AMOLED displays is reportedly outstripping supply. Manufacturers are in the process of significantly expanding their capacity for small-area OLED display applications and migration to larger format displays is expected. In addition, the development of white OLED lighting should create another exciting market opportunity for our technology and materials

TMZ, a supplier of OLED manufacturing technology claims that China is investing heavily in OLEDs – they want to challenge South-Korea. TMZ is a joint-venture between Cymer and Carl-Zeiss, selling lasers for OLED manufacturing. They have already installed one system in Korea, and plan to deliver the 2nd system to a Chinese company soon . read more

Showa Denko signs an OLED white lighting license agreement with UDC

Showa Denko announced that it has signed a license agreement for OLED Lighting technology with Universal Display . Showa Denko will be able to integrate Universal Display’s proprietary UniversalPHOLED phosphorescent and other OLED technologies into Showa Denko’s white OLED lighting products fabricated by solution-processing methods. Under the agreement, UDC will get license fees and running royalties.

Merck, Applied Materials and the Braunschweig University of Technology has been awarded a grant by the German government to develop processes to lower the cost of manufacturing large-area and efficient OLED Lighting for general illumination applications. The 3-year project is called Light InLine (or LILi)
