Engadget says that N9 uses a Clear Black Display is "a sight to behold"
Jun 21st
Engadget posted a short hands-on review on the new Nokia N9 . They claim that the display uses Nokia’s Clear Black Display (CBD) technology – although Nokia’s own press release never mentioned that. CBD adds a special filter on top of the display which blocks light reflection – and helps the AMOLED perform better outdoors. In any case, Engadget say that the AMOLED display “is truly a sight to behold, with stunning viewing angles, a curved Gorilla Glass front, and some pretty excellent (for AMOLED) performance out in the sunlight… It’s easily one of this new phone’s great strengths”. Here’s Engadget’s video hands on: read more

Samsung Electronics increases stake in SMD to 64.4%
Jun 2nd
A few months ago we reported that Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) will raise 3.4 trillion won (about $3 billion) from its parent companies (Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDI). Today we learned that Samsung Electronics increased its stake to 64.4% and SDI now has 35.6% (the joint-venture was split 50-50 before). Apparently there are reports that Samsung Electronics wants to take over SMD entirely, but SDI claims that this is not true and they want to keep their stake. The money will be used to boost SMD’s AMOLED production capacity. This investment is part of Samsung’s massive $4.8 billion OLED budget in 2011 . read more

New updated design for OLED-Info
May 23rd
We’re happy to announce that we updated our site’s design (which has been live since November 2008 ). We have added a top-menu that gives easy access to most of the content on our site, and also updated some inner pages (for example the companies page ). We will add some more small graphic tweaks in the coming weeks. We hope that the site will be easier to use now. Samsung develops a seamless foldable AMOLED
May 12th
Researchers from the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology in South Korea developed a new seamless foldable touch AMOLED display, that can fold in half without showing a visible crease. Samsung says that current research is mostly geared toward flexible/bendable displays , but a display that can be folded in half is great for making a large display in a portable form. To make the seamless display, the team used two AMOLED panels, silicone rubber, a glass cover and a modular case. Their prototype was folded 100,000 times – and still the brightness at center of the display (where the two panels meet) decreased by just 6% – which is hardly visible by a human eye. read more

Acuity Brands debuts two OLED luminaries planned for 2012 using LG Chem panels
May 5th
Acuity Brands launched two OLED luminaries, the company’s first. The two new products (called Kindred and Revel) are designed for indoor, ambient applications. Planned availability is Q1 2012. The company will show the new OLED lighting products at the LightFair International 2011 Tradeshow and Conference (May 17-19, 2011). The Kindred (shown above) is contemporary-styled lamp and it’s “engineered to provide a room with individualized canopies of light, blurring the lines between architecture and lighting”. The Kindred includes 45 OLED panels that output 3060 Lumens at 58 Watts (53lm/w). The lifetime is 15,000 hours (L70). read more

Kiwoom Securities: Sony and Samsung to wind-up their joint LCD company, to focus on OLEDs
Apr 27th
S-LCD (a joint-venture between Sony and Samsung) announced that it will reduce capital by $555 million. Kim Sun-in, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities says that this reflect a shrinking demand from Sony and the sector’s overall shift in focus to OLED displays. In fact, Kim says that Samsung and Sony will eventually wind up the business to focus on OLEDs instead. Sony 24.5-inch OLED prototype read more

A video of a Super AMOLED display under a 100X microscope
Apr 21st
Here’s a nice video showing Samsung’s Super AMOLED display under a 100X microscope (the device is a Samsung Focus phone ): You can see that this display uses a PenTile subpixel matrix (in which the (smaller) green subpixel is shared between two pixels). Samsung’s upcoming Super AMOLED Plus no longer uses a PenTile.

Toray and Cambrios develop the world’s most transparent conductive film
Apr 8th
Toray developed a new silver nano-wire based transparent conductive film that offers a light transmittance of 90% or more and surface resistivity, which is a measure of conductivity, between 150 and 250 ohm/sq- using wet coating method (Toray says that this is the world’s best film in terms of transparency and conductivity). The new material also offers superior flexibility, natural coloration, durability and workability. Toray will begin mass production in the ‘near future’. The new material was developed in partnership with Cambrios (who are also collaborating with Plextronics ). The companies say that this new material can find applications in touch panels, solar cells and OLED electrodes. read more

Some CMEL AMOLEDs fail after prolonged exposure to sun?
Apr 1st
I got word from a CMEL AMOLED user that some displays fail after prolonged exposure to sun. Interestingly, the displays seem to recover if left unpowered for a couple of days (out of the sun, that is). I wonder if any other AMOLED user experienced similar problems? In any case, here’s a video they uploaded showing the problematic displays: The CMEL module used by this company is a C0283QGLC-T. This is a 2.83″ diagonal 240×320 full-color AMOLED. CMEL no longer produces AMOLEDs (after the merger into CMI ) – but CMI seems to have an active OLED program that will soon go into production .
