Lux compares display developers for technical value and business execution
Feb 7th
Lux Research posted an interesting grid that shows how different display developers rate on technical value and business execution. It includes mature technologies (such as OLED and e-paper ) and emerging technologies such as electrochromic and electrofluidic displays. Lux says that OLED materials and equipment developers have a clear head start over other technologies, with notable players such as UDC , CDT , Novaled and Kateeva . The company that stands out in both technical value and business execution is E Ink – with high score in technology and IP and strong partnerships and management team. E Ink is the only company that scores a “strong positive” – with their nearly 100% market share of the electrophoretic market – which is used in products such as Amazon’s Kindle and B&N Nook e-readers. read more

New video mic flag uses 3 OLED displays, new advertising space
Feb 3rd
Recom group has released the world’s first video mic flag – which uses 3 to 4 (depends on configuration) OLED displays. The company reports that the new mic flag is already being used at by CBS, CNET, NBC, ABC, FOX, ESPN, CNN, and Bloomberg and was also used by several broadcasters at the superbowl and the NBA. This mic flag was also used by many broadcasters at CES, and CNN’s Katie Linendoll called it one of her top five picks of the show. The mic flag shows advertisements – from companies such as Ford, Toyota, Subway, Gillette and Pepsi. This brings extra revenue for the broadcasters. Recom says that the flag uses 3 to 4 OLED displays (probably the same ones as on Recom’s video name tag – 2.8″ 320×240 AMOLED panels) and it lasts 8-10 on a single battery charge. It provides a premium advertising space because it’s part of the broadcast. Here’s a video of the mic flag in action, from the superbowl: read more

Traffic supporting OLED luminaries concept
Jan 30th
Swedish research firm Visual Guidance Systems Scandinavia AB (VGS) developed a new road lighting system concept based around OLED luminaires. The basic idea is that the lamps come in different shapes (enabled by OLED area-lighting panel designs) that signals information processes to support drivers – so a lamp above a crossroad or a pedestrian crossing will signal the object beneath it: VGS sent us an article showcasing this new concept – with lot’s of examples and discussions how this compares with current road luminaries and advantages in safety and traffic management. You can download the article in the link below.

Holst Centre and imec to develop high-resolution flexible OLED displays
Jan 17th
The Holst Centre and imec announced a new high-resolution flexible OLED displays research program. This new program builds on the existing research fields such Organic and Oxide Transistors and Flexible OLED lighting . The new program aims to develop an economically scalable route to flexible AMOLED mass production, facing challenges such as high resolution, low power consumption, large area, outdoor readability, flexibility and light weight. The partners will develop a mechanically flexible encapsulation film and TFT backplane, a printed high-efficiency OLED, new materials and processes that will allow cheaper production at better quality and driver design. They will also develop a new manufacturing equipment such as fine patterning equipment for backplanes and tools for integrated roll-to-roll manufacturing. This new program follows up on the FLAME project . Above you can see a prototype Polymer-Vision made flexible OLED above which was developed during FLAME.

LG plans to sell 200,000-300,000 OLED TVs in 2012, 2 million in 2013
Jan 11th
LG says that they plan to sell 200,000 to 300,000 OLED TVs in 2012, and up to 2 million in 2013. This is actually quite an aggressive target. LG’s 55EM9600 55″ OLED TV won’t be available until May 2012 at the earliest – which means that LG will need to have a capacity of around 37,000 monthly panels – which isn’t likely with their current 8.5-Gen line as LG themselves said that at 100% yield the capacity will only be 30,000 panels a month . If LG Display actually plans to produce 2 million panels in 2013, they’ll need to start working on a new mass production plant now… read more

Color changing OLED Chair art project
Jan 8th
Artist Takahiro Matsuo designed a color changing “OLED Chair” art project which uses Verbatim’s Velve color-tunable OLED panels . This chair was on show at Tenjin IMS, Hakata, Japan in December 2011. The Velve panels do not generate any heat, so you can actually sit on this chair: read more

Toshiba to show an OLED tablet at CES
Jan 7th
CES hasn’t started yet (two more days!) but already news is coming in. This time it is Toshiba, announcing it will show a “high brightness” OLED tablet. We do not have any official information yet, although some sites suggest it will be a 7″ tablet. This actually makes sense as we know that Samsung just added a new 7″ AMOLED product which indeed features high brightness (400 nits). read more

Panasonic is building an 8.5-Gen OLED TV pilot production plant
Dec 9th
According to new reports, Panasonic started to build a new 8.5-Gen OLED TV pilot production plant in Himeji, Japan. The company has already ordered some of the equipment. Panasonic’s Himeji plant is currently producing LCDs (apparently it has a capacity of 810,000 monthly TVs). Reportedly, the investment in this stage will not be large as this will be a small pilot line – Panasonic currently only wants to do some R&D and testing there. The company still needs to assess the business model. But its clear that the Japanese maker does not want to leave the emerging OLED TV business to its Korean competitors… read more
