Engadget: The iPhone’s IPS-LCD display is the best we’ve seen on a mobile phone
Jun 23rd
Engadget has posted a review of Apple’s new iPhone 4 phone . They love the IPS-LCD display: “to our eyes, there has never been a more detailed, clear, or viewable screen on any mobile device…Because Apple is using IPS and LED technology for its screen, the iPhone 4 is mercifully visible in full sunlight, and performance in low light and at extreme viewing angles are favorable. Overall, you simply won’t find a better display on a phone, and that’s not just lip service.”

Sunlight visibility: Super-AMOLED vs AMOLED vs LCD
Jun 21st
TechBlog has done an interesting test, putting a Super-AMOLED vs a ‘regular’ AMOLED and an LCD in direct sunlight. They used 3 phones for the comparison: Samsung Galaxy S (4″ 480×800 super-AMOLED ), HTC Desire (3.7″ 480×800 AMOLED) and a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 (4″ 480×854 TFT LCD). It seems that the best display is still the LCD, but the Super-AMOLED (which is a lot better than the regular AMOLED) comes close – and most of the times the difference is negligible. read more

Nokia: The OLED in the N8 is better than the one used in the N86 in sunlight
Jun 17th
AllAboutSymbian has posted an interesting interview with Damian Dinning, Nokia’s Imaging Chief – talking about the upcoming N8 . He says that Nokia chose an AMOLED because of the richer colors and wide viewing angles. He also says that the new AMOLED used in the N8 is ‘definitely’ better than previous AMOLED efforts from Nokia (like the N86 and N85 ). It’s not known how it compares to Samsung’s ‘ Super AMOLED ‘. This is good news, as users of the n85 has been complaining about sunlight readability : saying it is totally useless in such situations.
