HTC to use AMOLED in their phones again?
Nov 10th
There are reports that HTC is preparing a new Android smartphone – which will come with a 4.3″ qHD Super AMOLED display (which seems to be the same one used in Motorola’s Droid RAZR ). This will be HTC’s first OLED phone since they switched back to LCD in June 2010 due to Samsung’s AMOLED supply issues . It’s great to see HTC back into OLEDs… The new handset (codename Ville) will sport a new UI (Sense 4.0), a 1.5Ghz dual-core processor and an 8mp camera (1080p video support). HTC will announce the Ville during MWC 2012 and release it in April 2012. read more

HTC officially puts Super-LCDs in the Desire and N1, says they look the same and use less power
Jul 26th
A few weeks ago it was rumored that HTC will start using Super-LCD displays instead of OLEDs in the HTC Desire and Nexus-One handsets. HTC says that the displays are comparable, and that the S-LCD actually consumes less power than the AMOLED displays. via Engadget

SLCD-equipped HTC Desire ‘coming soon’ to Telus
Jul 15th
We’d already seen an HTC Desire with North American 3G hit the FCC , and it looks like we now know exactly where it’s headed — Telus has just announced that the phone is “coming soon” to its network. What’s more, the carrier has also confirmed that the phone will be equipped with a 3.7-inch Sony Super LCD screen instead of the regular AMOLED display that’s in short supply . Otherwise, the phone is the same Android 2.1-powered, Snapdragon-based, Sense-skinned device we’ve seen all along, which is hardly a bad thing — unless you’re waiting for a Desire HD , that is. HTC to start using LCDs instead of OLEDs in the Desire phone
Jun 26th
HTC plans to start producing Incredible phones (and also Google Nexus One phones) that use IPS-LCD (or Super-TFT LCD) made by Sony. They will also keep using AMOLEDs – so we’ll see two models of these phones. HTC is doing this because Samsung cannot deliver enough AMOLED phones . HTC claims that there’s no discernible difference between the LCDs and the AMOLEDs, and they are working on some prototypes that we’ll hopefully see soon. read more

HTC running low on AMOLED stock, will add SLCD to the mix for some models
Jun 25th
AMOLED displays in phones haven’t necessarily lived up to their promise; they’d been billed as the be-all, end-all answer for clarity, vibrance, and low power consumption, but in reality, the latest and greatest LCDs look just as good, offer similar viewing angles, have little to no impact on battery life, and fare far better in direct sunlight. We’ve been able to confirm this evening that HTC will be adding an additional supplier of displays later this year — Sony — which will be delivering its Super TFT LCD tech as a mobile exclusive (initially, at least) to key HTC handsets, some of which are already in the marketplace. Specifically, Samsung’s had a devil of a time keeping up with deliveries of its 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED, which means that the Desire , Droid Incredible , and Nexus One could all theoretically be impacted — but because this is a problem of the demand for displays outstripping supply (or at least the supply that Samsung is letting HTC buy), at least some of the affected phones will likely be offered both in AMOLED and SLCD varieties. How those products will be differentiated in the market is unclear, but it may not matter much — we’re told that the displays are virtually indistinguishable. We’re working to get our hands on an SLCD phone just as soon as we can, and when we do, we’ll put our eyeballs on the case. The HTC Droid Incredible is suffering from AMOLED shortage
May 27th
The HTC Incredible is an Android (v2.1) phone with similar hardware to the Google’s Nexus One. It has a large 3.7″ 480×800 WVGA touch AMOLED display, made by Samsung. It costs $99 with a new service plan for Verizon , but it’s actually unavailable now. Verizon says that component shortages are to blame – specifically the AMOLED display (made by Samsung). HTC Incredible Samsung announced that they can’t meet customer demand in their OLED plant – and they won’t be able to do so until next year at least. Recently they commited $2.2 billion for new AMOLED production lines , to go online in 2012. read more

Droid Incredible review
Apr 19th
At this point, the HTC Incredible should seem like pretty familiar territory to our readers. We first caught wind of the device in a ROM leak back in December of 2009, and shortly thereafter saw lots of little snippets on the phone that made it clear it was headed our way. Of course, it’s a potent combination that’s been put together here — an HTC-made, Verizon-locked device sporting a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 8GB of internal storage, 748MB of ROM, a microSD slot (with support for up to 32GB cards), an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and autofocus, 480 x 800 AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, and most importantly, Android 2.1 with HTC’s Sense UI on-board. The combo of America’s largest (and some say best) 3G network with a super-fast, Sense-equipped Android phone is a match made in nerd heaven. We’ve seen a near-exact device in the HTC Desire — basically the Incredible for the European market — and the internals and screen technology are almost identical to the Nexus One, but the Incredible has a personality that’s all its own. So is this the next killer device on the US market? Or have we heard this tune before? Read on for the answers you seek! HTC Droid Incredible officially official for Verizon, April 29 for $200 (updated with a live shot!)
Apr 15th
Though some information leaked out of Verizon’s pipes yesterday , HTC just got really real with the Droid Incredible at the 99% Conference in New York today. Specs are pretty much what we expected: Android 2.1 with Sense , an 8 megapixel cam, 1GHz Snapdragon (not the underclocked core we’d heard rumored before, thankfully), WiFi, and a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display. Basically, this unit is a Sense-ified HTC Nexus One with an up-spec’d camera and a penchant for Verizon’s airwaves — and for a whole lotta Android users, that’s exactly what the doctor ordered. It hits on April 29 for $199.99 on contract after a $100 mail-in rebate — but in the mean time, you’ll be able to pre-order starting on the 19th. Full PR after the break. Update: We’ve also got a live shot of the device after the break. Thanks, Bryan! Update 2 : Verizon’s own Incredible site is now live — have fun over there! Thanks, Artem! HTC Desire turning japanese with SoftBank in late April
Mar 29th
The HTC Desire is spreading its wings today with the announcement of a distribution deal with Japan’s SoftBank. One of the big heavies over on that most famous archipelago, SoftBank will carry a WCDMA version of the handset with the standard Android 2.1 with Sense software and brownish externals. Sorry to disappoint our dear readers yearning for a silver or black option. Maybe in the future, eh? We don’t know what reaction to expect from the Japanese audience, but we suspect the language of effortless responsiveness and snazzy AMOLED screens will prove to be universally understood. HTC EVO 4G vs. HD2 and Desire… fight!
Mar 24th
Now that the excitement of the EVO 4G announce has finally worn off, it’s time to get down to more practical matters — in a street fight, would the WiMAX-powered beast hold its own against an HD2 and a Desire , for example? We had all three in a room just now, and here’s what we’ve got to say: It feels significantly beefier than the HD2, but in reality, it’s not — it’s just a single millimeter thicker. The brushed metal back of the HD2 is a little sexier, but just by the tiniest of margins; it’s hard to argue with soft touch and a kickstand, obviously. We would’ve never noticed this without the Desire next to it, but the EVO’s text is pretty huge, a side effect of the fact that it’s running the same resolution on a screen 0.6 inches larger. It’s not annoying, really, but it struck us that they could’ve comfortably fit quite a bit more information on the screen without getting cramped. The Desire’s display is more vibrant, too, but that makes sense — we’re indoors under artificial lighting and the Desire has AMOLED on board. The EVO’s got touch-sensitive buttons below the display that function much like the Nexus One’s, but no worries: they work quite a bit better. We think this might be because there’s more touch-sensitive bezel real estate below the keys; on the Nexus One, you’ve got to be far too accurate for comfort. Interestingly, this is the first EVO we’ve seen today with a silver earpiece grill — Sprint’s have been red. We’ve confirmed with HTC that production devices will be silver.
