Report: AMOLED sales in 1Q 2010 dropped 11% from last quater

UBi Sanup Research has posted their new OLED quarterly report for 1Q 2010. They say that AMOLED sales reached $183 million – a 11% drop compared to last quarter. Total OLED sales (PMOLED+AMOLED) reached $237 million – a decrease of %14 from last quarter. AMOLED account to 77% of total OLED sales. OLED shipments were 9.1 million units from Korea, 7.4m units Taiwan and 5.8m from Japan. UBi says that OLED shipments is expected to grow due to increased PMOLED and AMOLED supply. read more

Tuning Android color-filters used to improve the OLED display efficiency

A google employee (Jeff Sharkey) has posted an interesting post – testing how using different color filters in Android (on the Google Nexus One ) to test the OLED’s battery life. He use SurfaceFlinger (Android’s low-level window composer) and created several options: from red-only to full-color. Using just red halves the power consumption, and using red+green results in 25% better consumption. Jeff shares his patch online , so you can download and see for yourself. The phone remains usable, so this is an interesting way to save power… Jeff also posted a short video showing how the phone behaves using the different filters:

Samsung slashes $50 off their flagship TL500 AMOLED compact camera

Samsung has reduced the price of the TL500 compact camera by $50 (now it costs $399). The TL500 is Samsung’s flagship compact camera that’s very fast, has an ultra-wide and bright F/1.8 lens (3x zoom), 10mp and a large 3″ swiveling AMOLED . The TL500 costs $399 , you can buy it over at Amazon.com .

Liquidware (an open-source electronics firm) has released a kit that can be used to make a linux tablet with a 4.4″ (480×272) OLED touch display. The kit includes a BeagelBoard Rev C4 board (with a 720Mhz ARM Cortex-A8 OMAP cCPU, 20mm speaker, SD slot (it comes with a 4GB card), Wi-Fi, mini USB port and a battery. So you won’t get a real tablet – it’s very thick, and not very pretty – but you can play videos and access the web. And it costs just $393. Here’s a short video on the kit: read more

Micro Technology developed a new glass that is ultra thin (only 20um). It can be used as a substrate for flexible displays. The company made an OLED panel made using this new technology. They plan to offer this technology to FPD makers in the “near future”. read more

Remember the Dupont employee that tried to steal OLED technology trade secrets and give them to Peking University in Beijing? He is named Hong Meng, and he pleaded guilty on Tuesday. Meng is facing up to 10 years in prison. via TaiwanNews
