DisplayBank: the OLED market will grow to $12.8 billion by 2015
Nov 21st
Korean research firm DisplayBank says that the AMOLED market will grow from about $1.4 billion in 2010 to $12.8 billion in 2015. The growth will be led by small and medium AMOLED panels – and production technology will become more stable. OLED TV shipments, starting in 2012 , will also help the market exhibit fast growth rates. Back in April, DisplaySearch predicted that AMOLED for mobile phones sales will reach around $10 billion in 2015 (that’s without the tablet, laptop, monitor and TV markets). iSupply meanwhile are much less optimistic – they estimate that the total AMOLED market will reach $3.6 billion in sales in 2015 . read more

IMOLA – a new €5.1 million, 4 year European intelligent OLED lighting project
Sep 25th
IMOLA (Intelligent light management for OLED on foil applications) is a new EU-funded (€5.1 million) project that aims to realize large-area OLED lighting modules with built-in intelligent light management. The idea is that light intensity can be adjusted uniformly or locally according to the time of day or a person’s position – and applications include wall, ceiling and in-vehicle (dome) lighting. IMOLA’s OLED lighting module will consists of OLED tiles on a flexible backplane foil. Each tile can be individually controlled via the backplane. The intelligent part comes from a smart-power thin chip, advanced communication features and optical feedback. read more

Samsung Electronics increases stake in SMD to 64.4%
Jun 2nd
A few months ago we reported that Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) will raise 3.4 trillion won (about $3 billion) from its parent companies (Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDI). Today we learned that Samsung Electronics increased its stake to 64.4% and SDI now has 35.6% (the joint-venture was split 50-50 before). Apparently there are reports that Samsung Electronics wants to take over SMD entirely, but SDI claims that this is not true and they want to keep their stake. The money will be used to boost SMD’s AMOLED production capacity. This investment is part of Samsung’s massive $4.8 billion OLED budget in 2011 . read more

Video interview with Novaled’s chief scientist
Mar 9th
Ecosummit TV posted a nice interview with Dr. Jan Blochwitz-Nimoth, Novaled ‘s co-founder and chief scientist. Jan discusses the company’s business, technology, OLED doping and other interesting topics. In the video description in YouTube they say that Novaled had €11 million in revenues in 2010. The company reported around $8 million in revenue in 2008, so this makes sense. We posted our own interview with Gerd Guenther, Novaled’s marketing chief a couple of months ago .

DisplaySearch sees rapid expansion of LTPS capacity for AMOLED and LCDs
Feb 9th
DisplaySearch says that strong demand for Low Temperature Polysilicon (LTPS) based displays (LCDs and AMOLEDs ) will drive rapid expansion of LTPS capacity. Spending on LTPS-equipment is expected to reach $2.4 billion in 2011 (and will decrease in 2012 and 2013). DisplaySearch says that making AMOLEDs and high-end LCDs like the ones used in Apple’s iPhone 4 is only currently possible with LTPS. In 2011, supply of both AMOLEDs and LTPS LCDs are forecast to be extremely tight. Leading panel makers are for the first time ever scaling LTPS technology to Gen-5.5 and larger substrates. read more

Wintek and TPK to co-develop AMOLED displays
Oct 18th
A few weeks ago we reported that Wintek is eying the OLED market and looks for a strategic partner . It seems that they have found one in TPK Touch Solutions. Both companies expect AMOLEDs to become a mainstream technology for high-end smartphones. Both companies are experts in Touch Panels and are likely to develop touch-AMOLEDs, so maybe they’ll develop something similar to Samsung’s Super-AMOLED displays. It is expected that Wintek will shift existing TFT production equipment to AMOLED production. TPK is already recruiting employees for AMOLED production in Taiwan and China. read more
NanoMarkets releases new OLED Lighting report, forecasts $6 billion in revenue by 2015
Aug 6th
NanoMarkets released a new report (“ OLED Lighting, An Eight-Year Market Forecast (2010) ” in which they say that OLED lighting will generate $6 billion in revenue by 2015. OLED lighting will grow quickly because of the need for cost efficient lighting in a number of different applications, including general illumination, architectural lighting, backlighting, vehicular lighting and signage. Novaled transparent OLED lighting panel Most firms today focus on general illumination and/or architectural lighting sectors. These two markets will generate around $4 billion in 2015. Vehicular lighting is expected to bring over $750 million. Nanomarkets say that if OLED will provide an alternative backlighting technology for LCDs, these alone could generate further $1.4 billion by 2015. read more
