iSupply: The 3.7" AMOLED in the Droid Incredible costs $31.2
Jul 30th
iSupply has published a teardown analysis of the HTC Droid Incredible , saying that the phone costs $163 to make. They say that the AMOLED display (Samsung’s 3.7″ 480×800) costs $31.20. This is rather strange, as back in January, they claimed that the same display, used in Google’s Nexus-One phone costs $23.5 . HTC Incredible So maybe the costs went up (because of Samsung’s short supply). Back in January, iSupply estimated that the Touch Interface costs $17.75 . So maybe the cost of both the touch and the AMOLED went down, and now they cost $31.2 together? The HTC Incredible is now shipping for Verizon’s network in the US – and it costs $99 with a new service plan (if you want to use an existing plan, it’ll cost $530 ). read more

Verizon sends letter, $25 gift card to patient Droid Incredible buyers
Jul 1st
Still haven’t received your HTC Droid Incredible due to that AMOLED shortage ? Then it looks like you’ll soon be hearing from Verizion, if you haven’t already. Android Central reports that the carrier has begun sending letters to all customers still waiting for their phones that apologizes for delay, and informs them that they’ll soon also be receiving a $25 Verizon gift card as a little thank you for their patience. As for when you’ll actually receive the phone itself, however, Verizion is only saying that if your order date was June 28th or prior, you “may experience an additional delay of up to 7 business days.” [Thanks, Jacob] Verizon sends letter, $25 gift card to patient Droid Incredible buyers originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 01 Jul 2010 14:48:00 EDT. Motorola selling Droids faster than it can make them, has up to four videophones in pipeline
Jun 10th
In case you’re not yet convinced that video chat is the next big thing phone makers are going to push on us, let Motorola’s Sanjay Jha enlighten you. Having just launched the video-centric Motorola XT720 in Europe ( sans a front-facing camera), Jha is promising that his crew will deliver between two and four handsets this year with the equipment necessary to carry out video calls. Funnily enough, Moto’s co-CEO describes himself as someone who’s “never been a great believer” in the functionality, but clearly his company’s seeing a trend it feels the need to be a part of. Speaking of trends, Moto has also fallen afoul of supply shortages similar to those constraining Droid Incredible inventory , with Jha saying about the Moto Droid, “if I could build more, I’d sell more.” And if you could get Android 2.2 on them, you’d have some really happy customers too. Android display battle: In the end, there can be only One
Feb 3rd
It’s not everyday you get to see six (6!) Android devices pitted against each other in a display-quality grudge match. No, not that sensor sensitivity nonsense again, rather, just a plain ol’ video playback comparison for your subjective observations. Fortunately, the Android-loving kids over at HDBlog shot a video of the MyTouch 3G, HTC Hero, Motorola Milestone / Droid, Acer Liquid, Nexus One, and Samsung Galaxy (laid out clockwise in the image above). In our opinion, the Nexus One with its 3.7-inch AMOLED display packing a 800 x 480 pixel resolution comes out on top with the best overall image (though slightly on the red end of the color spectrum) — good thing the video wasn’t shot outdoors where that AMOLED is all but unreadable . But hey, that’s our opinion, form your own in the video after the break. Droid more valuable than Nexus One or iPhone 3GS according to iSuppli
Jan 15th
Ah, here we go again: another report from iSuppli breaking down the bill of materials (BOM) for one of our favorite smartphones. This time it’s the Droid / Milestone under scrutiny, Motorola’s beefcake slider that currently sells for $560 month-to-month on Verizon ($199 on contract). According to iSuppli’s analysis, Droid brings a $187.75 bill of materials that breaks down into $179.11 worth of components and $8.64 in manufacturing costs. Naturally, the BOM does not include licensing fees, software costs, accessories, or the massive outlay this device has received in advertising support. Nevertheless, it makes for interesting apples-to-apples fodder when comparing costs with the Nexus One ( $174.15 in materials only), iPhone 3GS ( $178.96 materials and manufacturing), and original Palm Pre ( $138 materials and manufacturing). The single most expensive component on the Droid is the 16GB removable microSD card ($35) bundled with the Droid. And after a controversial MOTO report that demonstrated a lackluster capacitive touchscreen on the Droid, it’s interesting to compare the Droid’s 3.7-inch TFT LCD ($17.75) and capacitive touchscreen overlay ($17.50) with that of the iPhone 3GS ($19.25 spent on a smaller 3.5-inch LCD and cheaper $16 touchscreen overlay) and Nexus One (whopping $23.50 for 3.7-inch AM-OLED display and $17.50 for the touchscreen assembly). Rounding out the top-end costs are the Droid’s 5 megapixel autofocus CMOS sensor ($14.25), Qualcomm baseband processor / RF chip ($14.04), and TI application processor ($12.90).
