AUO and the FDC to co-develop flexible AMOLED displays
Nov 17th
The Flexible Display Center (FDC) at Arizona State University and AU-Optronics will co-develop mixed oxide thin film transistors (TFTs) for flexible AMOLED displays. AUO and the FDC will work in active partnership with dedicated engineering teams to advance mixed oxide transistor technology and the handling capabilities of conventional flat panel display (FPD) manufacturing processes to accommodate the thin, plastic substrates used for AMOLED flexible displays. Mixed oxide TFTs offer a better ability to drive currents and improve the lifetime and stability of transistors used for OLED displays. Flexible AMOLED by ITRI AUO is also working towards flexible displays together with Taiwan’s ITRI . AUO plans to start mass producing AMOLED displays in Q2 2011 (but these will not be flexible…).

Plextronics and Cambrios to co-develop materials for OLED lighting
Nov 10th
Plextronics and Cambrios announced that they will co-develop cost-effective high performance material that could improve OLED lighting’s production process and quality. This is partly funded by the US Department of Energy (DOE). The project has actually started in April 16th, and will last for two years. We reported about the $1.2 DOE grant to Cambrios back in January 2010 . The whole project will cost $1.8 according to the earlier report. The idea is to apply Plextronic’s PlexCore OC hole injection layer (HIL) material on top of Cambrios’ ClearOhm material which creates a transparent electrode to form a transparent conducting hole injection (TCHI) electrode.

Wintek to mass produce AMOLED displays at the end of 2011
Nov 10th
There are reports that Wintek will transfer its 3-Gen production lines for AMOLED and LTPS production and will start mass production towards the end of 2011. Wintek will invest around $100 million in the AMOLED program. A few weeks ago we reported the Wintek will use the old production line of Windell in the Taichung Industrial Park, Taiwan. According to the new reports, Wintek will not use Windell’s production lines, but will indeed use their R&D team to develop the AMOLED products. It was also said that Wintek will collaborate with TPK on AMOLED development . read more

ITRI developed a 6" flexible color AMOLED
Oct 27th
Taiwas’s ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute) has developed a new 6″ flexible color AMOLED, using their FlexUPD technology. The display is just 0.01cm thick, and can continue to show images even when folded. The folding radius can reach 5cm or less, and the screen can be scrolled up to 15,000 times. ITRI says that their FlexUPD technology is the simplest and cheapest technology for mass production paper-like displays. FlexUPD will be commercialized soon, and AUO plans to use it for flexible e-reader products “very soon”. read more

TDK’s flexible and transparent PMOLED video
Oct 27th
Remember TDK’s flexible and transparent PMOLED prototypes shown earlier this month? We found a nice video showing these great displays: The transparent OLED is a 2″ (320×240) panel with 50% transmittance. The flexible panels are 3.5″ (256×64 only) – and there are two models: a color one and a monochrome one.

Samsung shows the "Future of AMOLED Displays"
Oct 26th
Samsung has released a short video clip showing the “Future of AMOLED displays”, which obviously includes flexible, bendable and transparent displays which are also 3D enabled . Watch it, it’s fun:

Wintek and TPK to co-develop AMOLED displays
Oct 18th
A few weeks ago we reported that Wintek is eying the OLED market and looks for a strategic partner . It seems that they have found one in TPK Touch Solutions. Both companies expect AMOLEDs to become a mainstream technology for high-end smartphones. Both companies are experts in Touch Panels and are likely to develop touch-AMOLEDs, so maybe they’ll develop something similar to Samsung’s Super-AMOLED displays. It is expected that Wintek will shift existing TFT production equipment to AMOLED production. TPK is already recruiting employees for AMOLED production in Taiwan and China. read more
TDK’s new flexible PMOLED prototype on video
Oct 4th
Update: We also found a video of TDK’s transparent PMOLED, see below Yesterday we reported about TDK’s new 3.5″ (256×64) flexible PMOLED panels. Today we found a new short video showing the color one: TDK says that the contrast, brightness and lifetime are “almost the same as TDK’s existing glass-subtrate PMOLEDs”. The OLED inside is a white emitter, with RGB-color filters. TDK will start mass production at the end of 2011. Here’s a video of TDK’s transparent PMOLED, also announced yesterday: read more
