NKK doubles the lifetime and increase the efficiency of their OLED switch

Remember NKK’s programmable OLED pushbutton switch ? Introducing in July 2008, it includes a 65K color OLED module capable of full-motion video. Today NKK announced that they have released a new version that doubles the lifetime of the OLED display (to 30,000 hours) and reduced the power consumption by 30%. Here’s NKK’s original funny ad for the OLED switch:

Blackbody to show new OLED lamps designs

Blackbody will show new OLED lamp designs at the NOW! Maison & Objet Fair (September 3rd to 7th, 2010). All of the new lamps were designed by C+B Lefebvre. Those lamps are available to buy, but probably cost quite a bit . Here are my two favorites: The first lamp (shown above) is called 6″O” with an active area of 540cm2, color temperature of 3200 K°, 26W power consumption and it weights 5.5Kg : “Providing both linear and surface illumination, this light bridge creates an enlightened area free of shadows and glare. This virtually tamed lighting offers both direct illumination whilst simultaneously bathing the surrounding area in a halo of soft light. read more

OLED commercialization is driving the growth of sealing, barrier and encapsulation technologies

Cintelliq has released a new report ( Encapsulation and barriers: A review of the patent landscape ) and say that “The commercialisation of OLED technology is driving the growth of sealing, barrier and encapsulation technologies”. OLEDs are responsible for more than 90% of the new patents in those technologies. “The increasing market acceptance of OLED based displays has been a major driver in the development of encapsulation systems, as OLED lighting begins to gain market adoption this too will also be a primary driver for further development. In fact the growth in encapsulation and barrier technologies has shown the same explosive growth OLED lighting has shown since 2000.”

AMOLED android handsets has the poorest battery life?

Someone did a battery-life comparison of several android handsets, and according to that test, handsets with AMOLED has the poorest battery life. LCD handsets are better (the Galaxy S, with its large Super-AMOLED display is in the middle). Of course the AMOLED display is not the only difference between those handsets. AMOLED should theoretically offer lower power consumption, but this is not the first time we hear that newer LCDs are actually better. For example, when HTC replaced AMOLEDs with LCDs in the Desire phones (and others), they said that the battery life is better with LCDs. The good news is that Samsung plans to soon double the efficiency of their AMOLED displays . AMOLEDs are at an early stage soon, so we can expect fast advances in all aspects, including efficiency. read more

Samsung to officially announce the Galaxy Tab on September 2nd

Samsung is finally announcing the Galaxy Tab – they have released a short video showing the device, saying it’ll be revealed on September 2nd. We know it runs Android 2.2, supports flash, video calling, plays HD movies and has a GPS. It’s also an e-reader . The display is 7″, but we don’t know whether it’s an LCD or a Super-AMOLED display.

LG to show a 31" OLED TV at IFA 2010?

There are some reports that LG plans to show a new 31″ OLED TV at IFA 2010 (September 3rd). We know that LG want to introduce larger OLED TVs, but it’s highly unlikely that it’ll happen so soon – not until their Gen-5.5 plant goes online in 2012 , anyway. LGE 15EL9500 LG is selling the EL9500 15″ OLED TV in Europe and in Korea – still not in the US though. read more

UDC announces their 2Q 2010 financial reports

Universal Display reported their financial results for the last quarter. Revenues were $8.4 million, compared to $2.9 a year ago. Most of the rise is attributed to development contracts and the sale of development materials. UDC reported a net loss of $4.4 million. Operating loss was reduced to $1.9 million (down from $6.3 a year ago). Sidney D. Rosenblatt, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Universal Display said: “Demand for AMOLED displays is reportedly outstripping supply. Manufacturers are in the process of significantly expanding their capacity for small-area OLED display applications and migration to larger format displays is expected. In addition, the development of white OLED lighting should create another exciting market opportunity for our technology and materials

New low-cost OLED lighting project gets funding from the UK

A new project called TOPDRAWER (Thin organic prototypes, design, research, applications with end-user recognition) has secured funding from the UK government, and will start in early November and will run for 2.5 years. This is actually a followup project to TOPLESS , and is also lead by Thorn lighting. TOPLESS project OLED lamp prototype The consortium will develop and demonstrate a printed manufacturing process that will be integrated into attractive designs that have been created through consultation with potential end-users. The manufacturing process will be proved and tested within PETEC, that will acquire and install a large-area coating line. In June 2008 we interviewed Dr. Geoff Williams, TOPLESS’ manager (and we also assume he will manage the new project). In December 2008, TOPLESS showed a prototype lamp. The efficiency is about 17Lm/W (as there is no out-coupling. With out-coupling the efficiency is over 30Lm/W), each panel operating at 3W. The panels are just 0.7mm thick, made by Sumation with TOPLESS materials read more

Pantech drops AMOLED completely due to shortage, may resume use in 2H 2011

The Pantech Vega that just hit Korea may boast a sizable 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, but don’t expect future phones from the Helio manufacturer to follow suit — after suffering the same shortages that drove HTC to Sony’s SLCD-illuminated doorstep , Pantech’s also temporarily giving active-matrix organic technology the boot. Now, you may not give two nickels about the technologies in Pantech’s next handset, but the firm’s got a finger on the industry’s pulse. So when an unnamed executive says “phones to be rolled out in the first half of next year” won’t use AMOLED, that hints at when the shortage for US-bound devices might also let up. In case you’re curious, 2H 2011 is when Samsung’s next AMOLED facility is slated to open, though by that point AU Optronics and TPO Display should be shipping the screens as well. AUO will use a third of AFPD’s production lines for AMOLED (15,000 substrates a month)

AU Optronics has acquired Toshiba Mobile Display’s subsidiary, AFPD . AFPD had a Gen-4.5 LTPS plant. Now we hear that AUO plans to use a third of the lines in that plant for AMOLED production. This means 15,000 substrates a month in 2011. AUO’s own Gen 3.5 factory (which will also go in line in 2011 ) will contribute 7,000 monthly substrates. AUO 14-inch OLED prototype
