HTC makes Super LCD screens for Desire and Nexus One official
Jul 26th
Welcome back to our “worst kept secrets” hour, where HTC has seen fit to release a PR blast informing the world of what it already knew: the Desire and Nexus One are getting Super (duper) LCD displays to fill demand that Samsung’s AMOLED division cannot . Interestingly, HTC’s statement says nothing of the Droid Incredible , a close sibling to these 3.7-inch devices, but the global Nexus One and Desire are getting hooked up “later this summer.” CEO Peter Chou has also helpfully explained that the visual experience on the new SLCD screens is “comparable” to AMOLED, but offers better battery performance. Color us curious to see and hear more. SLCD-equipped HTC Desire ‘coming soon’ to Telus
Jul 15th
We’d already seen an HTC Desire with North American 3G hit the FCC , and it looks like we now know exactly where it’s headed — Telus has just announced that the phone is “coming soon” to its network. What’s more, the carrier has also confirmed that the phone will be equipped with a 3.7-inch Sony Super LCD screen instead of the regular AMOLED display that’s in short supply . Otherwise, the phone is the same Android 2.1-powered, Snapdragon-based, Sense-skinned device we’ve seen all along, which is hardly a bad thing — unless you’re waiting for a Desire HD , that is. Super AMOLED vs AMOLED vs LCD in direct sunlight… fight! (video)
Jun 21st
By now you know that (one of) AMOLED’s Achilles’ heel is readability in direct sunlight . But Samsung’s been working hard to fix that with its new Super AMOLED technology. Techblog took the display to task by pitting the Samsung Galaxy S (4-inch, 480 x 800 pixel Super AMOLED) against the HTC Desire (3.7-inch 480 x 800 pixel AMOLED) and Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 (4-inch, 480 x 854 pixel TFT LCD). It’s clear from the video embedded after the break that the LCD still has the edge in the harsh Greek sun, but the Super AMOLED certainly makes a much stronger showing than its AMOLED sib. In fact, differences in visibility between the LCD and Super AMOLED are often indistinguishable, like the picture above. That’ll be good news for us just as soon as Samsung can start meeting demand … regardless of what Stevie J has to say . Check the video after the break and be sure to click the source for some more side-by-side pics, including a few taken indoors where that Super AMOLED display really shines. HTC Desire review
Apr 1st
Following the Legend , HTC continues its Android 2.1 lineup with the Desire — a gorgeous cousin of the renowned Nexus One . We can trace our drool all the way back to the Desire’s leak in December , but there have been some changes since then that made it slightly less desirable — DivX support and 720p video capture never made it to the final build, but it’s not like the company laid down any official promise on them, right? Anyhow, there’s still plenty to be loved here, namely the speedy 1GHz Snapdragon, the large AMOLED screen, and HTC’s latest revision of Sense UI that we’ve already seen on the Legend. Now, there are probably two questions floating in the minds of our readers: is the Desire worth the extra moola over the Legend? And is it any better than the Nexus One? Let’s all find out together. Update: commenter NigelL pointed out that HTC will push out DivX support in a future update . Thanks! HTC Desire turning japanese with SoftBank in late April
Mar 29th
The HTC Desire is spreading its wings today with the announcement of a distribution deal with Japan’s SoftBank. One of the big heavies over on that most famous archipelago, SoftBank will carry a WCDMA version of the handset with the standard Android 2.1 with Sense software and brownish externals. Sorry to disappoint our dear readers yearning for a silver or black option. Maybe in the future, eh? We don’t know what reaction to expect from the Japanese audience, but we suspect the language of effortless responsiveness and snazzy AMOLED screens will prove to be universally understood.
