Intel’s Intelligent Home Energy Management device is an OLED beauty, sadly just a concept
Apr 8th
We know, the last thing the world needs is another home tablet (see Sony Dash , HP Dreamscreen and Chumby ), but bear with us for a second on Intel’s Intelligent Home Energy Management proof of concept. Instead of providing just the typical weather, Pandora, and video memo apps, the Atom Z530-powered screen also manages your home’s energy consumption. The idea is that the WiFi-enabled device works with your local energy company to provide data as well as suggestions on how to lower that insane monthly bill. It also apparently can update you as to what government subsides are being offered and deals on more power efficient appliances. If that all sounds too earthy to you, we at least can tell you it’s one beautiful gadget — the 11.2-inch capacitive OLED screen is simply stunning and the user interface that’s been built on top of Windows XP isn’t so bad looking itself. For now the whole thing is just a concept, but Intel was quite confident in saying that we will see gadgets with its Home Energy platform popping up sooner or later. We just hope someone picks up that beautifully designed hardware. Don’t you worry you can see it too in the video demo after the break. Studio XPS 16 OLED concept laptop hands-on
Jan 8th
Beautiful viewing angle and legitimately wide viewing angle, the Studio XPS 16 OLED concept laptop was on hand and turning heads at Dell’s CES suite. It’s definitely a beaut, claiming a super-thin 2mm screen, a 0.004ms response time, and a contrast ratio “exceeding 10,000:1.” The big catch here, as you can see in some of the images below (the giant “Please Do Not Touch” sign deterred us from fixing ourselves) is that the ultra-glossy wrist panel is a beacon for dust. Feast your eyes below! Gallery: Studio XPS 16 OLED concept laptop hands-on Studio XPS 16 OLED concept laptop hands-on originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 08 Jan 2010 17:20:00 EST. ASUS Waveface concept line shown off during our lifetime, might be available after it (video)
Jan 8th
ASUS is back at it again with the crazy concept designs, and this time around it’s brought the lustworthy Waveface collection to look pretty behind glass. There are three different concepts in the lineup that aim to redefine computing in almost every way imaginable. First up is the Ultra, which is a wearable computer / mobile phone based around a flexible OLED display and can be controlled through hand gestures in mid air or by touching the display. Next is the Light, which is also based around a folding OLED, but will have some sort of physical keyboard that pops up when folded up into the laptop form factor. Lastly, the Waveface Casa, a television-esque home computer that will also be controlled through gestures in the air. We wish we could show you how said gestures would work — or how any of this would work, really — but these were really nothing more than empty shells filled with displays. Clearly this tech is a far ways off, but it’s good to know that ASUS still has quite the imagination — and hopefully the knowhow to maybe make it real someday.
