What’s behind Nokia’s ClearBlack display technology?
Feb 5th
Nokia’s ClearBlack Display technology has been announced in September 2010, and Nokia is using it in several phones (including the Lumia 900 , Lumia 800 and older Symbian models such as the X7 and E7 ). We know that it includes polarizing filters to block incoming light. Today however Nokia finally revealed how it actually works: A CBD filter includes both a linear polariser and retardation layers between the surface of your phone and the display. When light hits your screen, this is what happens: read more

Philips and BASF co-develop transparent OLEDs for car roofs
Jan 19th
Remember Daimler’s Smart Forvision concept EV ? That car has a transparent solar-panels on the roof, see-through dashboard and transparent OLEDs for internal lighting – on the roof of the car. We knew that Daimler was collaborating with BASF on this concept, and today BASF released a press release saying that indeed they developed those panels together with Philips. The OLEDs are transparent when switched off, allowing for a clear view outside the vehicle, yet providing light only within the vehicle when switched on. The transparent OLED sandwich structure can be combined with equally transparent solar cells, as was demonstrated in the Smart Forvision. This developing was achieved as part of a longstanding cooperation (since 2006) between BASF and Philips in the research and development of OLED modules. read more

CES 2012 – praise for Samsung’s and LG’s OLED TVs
Jan 13th
So, OLED was the most discussed tech trend on CES . But the OLED TVs also got a lot of praise from reviewers and consumers – who were amazed to see the panel’s thinness, the contrast, the colors and the fast refresh rates. In short – the image on Samsung’s and LG’s OLED TVs is amazing! Samsung Super OLED TV CNET gave LG’s OLED TV the “Best of CES” award: “The winning LG measures just 4mm in depth…and boasts a bezel around the screen just 1mm wide. It’s basically all gorgeous picture… CES is a TV-centric show, OLED is potentially the best TV technology ever, and CNET editors agreed that 2012 would be the year of the organic diode”. CNET actually says that it’s hard to say which is the better OLED TV – the Samsung or the LG one, but LG seems to be more of a finished product, so they gave the award to LG. read more

LG plans to sell 200,000-300,000 OLED TVs in 2012, 2 million in 2013
Jan 11th
LG says that they plan to sell 200,000 to 300,000 OLED TVs in 2012, and up to 2 million in 2013. This is actually quite an aggressive target. LG’s 55EM9600 55″ OLED TV won’t be available until May 2012 at the earliest – which means that LG will need to have a capacity of around 37,000 monthly panels – which isn’t likely with their current 8.5-Gen line as LG themselves said that at 100% yield the capacity will only be 30,000 panels a month . If LG Display actually plans to produce 2 million panels in 2013, they’ll need to start working on a new mass production plant now… read more

Jan 2nd
One week after LG Display officially announced their upcoming 55″ OLED TV panel , LG Electronics now released their own PR with new details and photos – and some interesting marketing messages. They also revealed the model number: 55EM9600 . LGE says that the new panel uses their 4-Color Pixel and Color Refiner features. The four colors (RGBW) are made from white OLED subpixels with color filters ( Kodak’s technology ). The “Color Refiner” is a set of algorithms which improves and refine hues and tones. LG says that their OLED TV will generate the most natural colors of any TV set – at a much lower price point than could have been achieved using the standard OLED manufacturing process. read more

Plextronics and Cambrios started to market OLED lighting electrode material
Dec 14th
Back in April 2010 Plextronics and Cambrios started to develop a new electrode material for OLED panels . The two companies announced today that they have begun to co-market the new electrode aimed towards OLED lighting devices. The transparent conducting hole injection (TCHI) electrode is based on Plextronics ‘ Plexcore OC HIL material and Cambros’ ClearOhm material. This new electrode is a cheaper alternative to ITO. The development was funded in part by the DOE (which gave $1.2 million out of the total $1.8 million project cost). read more
