Nanobrick Miyoul OLED media frames are for your luxurious inner-self
Jan 13th
Remember those elegant mantelpieces with OLED infusion launched at CES ? Turns out they’re from a company called Nanobrick that dubs this product range Miyoul. Most of the 11 models sport multiple screens — either 3.3-inch or 4.1-inch — but such indulgence seems to be out of touch with current OLED prices, not to mention the cost of craftsmanship on top of that. Until the day we can afford a Miyoul in each room, just keep trying your lucky lottery numbers. Nanosys offers better saturation of LED-backlit displays with nanoscale coating
Jan 12th
While we all wait around for larger-sized OLED displays to become feasible for the consumer market, Nanosys has stolen in and demonstrated a new LED coating technique that proposes to radically improve color saturation in LED-backlit screens. Based on standard blue LEDs — the most efficient kind — this works by applying nanoparticles to the light and thereby endowing it with the desired hue. While the nano-coating can make standalone LED lights far richer in color, the real potential is in its deployment in LED-backlit displays, such as those becoming dominant on laptops today. By employing a coated array of blue LEDs instead of the standard white stuff, this can deliver greater color saturation while fitting within the same energy profile of current LED tech. Products boasting Nanosys’ new hotness are said to be coming out later this year, with some appropriate premium slapped on the price for the fancier output. Favi RIOLED-Q and RIOLED-V pico projectors launched: the future is bright, wireless
Jan 10th
Looks like the world’s still got appetite for some more pico projectors , as Favi ‘s releasing a pair some time between late February and early March for prices yet unknown. First is the RIOLED-Q (pictured) which sports a pretty 800 x 600 native resolution at 50 lumens — supposedly the best brightness in class (like the Optoma PK301 ), along with built-in SD / MMC card reader, battery, three-watt stereo speaker and an ever-so-handy digital keystone correction. Joining the party is the smaller RIOLED-V which is shy about its display specification, but proudly packs a card reader and WiFi to cater its various web apps for YouTube, Flickr, Picasa, Yahoo News, Weather, Email, Internet Radio and web browser. Too bad it doesn’t do phone calls . Fils Sound Film transparent speaker hands-on (video)
Jan 10th
Korean gadgets these days are either gunning for next-to-nothing thinness or mind-boggling transparency , which is marvelous. Today we came across another Korean company (and an old friend ), Fils, which does transparent “sound film” speakers in many forms: photo frame, umbrella, curtains, cap, hoodie and even model yacht (yeah, seriously), all thanks to the highly-flexible piezoelectric film. Sure, the sound quality was hardly top-notch, but apparently Fils is hooking up with a few big-name Korean electronic companies (TVs?), so we’re all going to suffer soon whether you like it or not. Cheer yourself up with the video after the break. ASUS Waveface concept line shown off during our lifetime, might be available after it (video)
Jan 8th
ASUS is back at it again with the crazy concept designs, and this time around it’s brought the lustworthy Waveface collection to look pretty behind glass. There are three different concepts in the lineup that aim to redefine computing in almost every way imaginable. First up is the Ultra, which is a wearable computer / mobile phone based around a flexible OLED display and can be controlled through hand gestures in mid air or by touching the display. Next is the Light, which is also based around a folding OLED, but will have some sort of physical keyboard that pops up when folded up into the laptop form factor. Lastly, the Waveface Casa, a television-esque home computer that will also be controlled through gestures in the air. We wish we could show you how said gestures would work — or how any of this would work, really — but these were really nothing more than empty shells filled with displays. Clearly this tech is a far ways off, but it’s good to know that ASUS still has quite the imagination — and hopefully the knowhow to maybe make it real someday. Samsung 700Z OLED photo frame hands-on
Jan 7th
Man, what is it about OLED displays that makes us weak in the knees? Samsung has gone on an OLED binge here at this year’s CES , stuffing the awesome screen tech into almost anything they can. Next up: the 700Z, a snazzy piano black photo frame that has built in Bluetooth and 4GB of internal memory. There isn’t much else to say about this piece of fingerprint-attracting tech, but it sure does look pretty. Samsung’s Mobile DTV-enabled Moment hands-on
Jan 6th
Samsung’s out and about this evening showing off its just-announced Moment with extra Mobile DTV circuitry stuffed in , and if you thought it looked an awful lot like a standard Moment… well, you’d be absolutely right. The only notable change is an articulating, telescoping antenna that screws into the top of the phone — a sure sign that this device is nothing but a trial unit since we’d assume retail devices would have a sexier way to stow it. Speaking of stowage, what do you do when you’re not watching TV? Pop off the antenna, collapse it, and screw it into the attached charm — “geeky” doesn’t even begin to describe it. Anyhow, we got a little video of the modded Moment in action — unfortunately, Samsung’s having reception issues with its private broadcast setup (there’s no Mobile DTV network here in Vegas, or anywhere, for that matter) but we were able to see how the UI’s going to work and learn a little bit about the system. Guide data will typically be pulled over the TV airwaves, though the company says that it’ll be up to the manufacturer and carrier if they want to supplement or replace that with a 3G-based feed; the video was coming down at 416 x 240 and can be shown full-screen on the Moment’s AMOLED display. Unlike MediaFLO, it’s completely free for users — and that might be just the kick in the pants mobile TV needs to take hold. Follow the break for our video! Samsung flirts coyly with 7-inch AMOLED Digital Photo Frame
Jan 5th
We know exactly what you were thinking when you first heard the news that Kodak was selling its OLED business to LG: 1) wait, Kodak had an OLED business, and b) who the hell will I buy my $1,000 OLED digital photo frame from now? The latter part of this conundrum has just been answered by Samsung who will unveil its 700Z Digital Photo Frame here at CES. Sammy’s offering boasts a 7-inch AMOLED display, 4GB of internal memory, Bluetooth with video support. Unfortunately, the frame’s million-to-1 contrast ratio isn’t enough to distract this product model from her dreams of beauty pageant stardom.
