Samsung’s Cetus SGH-i917 sashays into FCC database, winks seductively at AT&T
Aug 6th
AT&T came right out and confessed that it would be ” the premiere carrier ” for Windows Phone 7 , and while it’s obviously far too early to say if that’ll be the case, this ain’t a bad way to start proving one’s point. Samsung’s Cetus (SGH-i917) was just recently confirmed to be one of the first commercial Windows Phone 7 devices last week, and now the always-disclosing FCC database has shed even more light on the phone’s intentions. Based on the mention of 850 / 1,900MHz frequency support — and that whole “SGH-i917 (ATT)” marking on the label — it’s pretty safe to assume that this 4-inch, AMOLED-packin’ superphone will soon be fighting with the iPhone 4 for shelf space. There’s obviously no indication of when Ma Bell plans on releasing this one to the wilds, but it’s typically not too far out after hitting this milestone. Giddy yet? Bluetooth 4.0 specification gets official, devices expected by Q4 2010
Jul 7th
Outside of Samsung’s Wave , we’re having a hard time thinking of a meaningful device that has shipped with Bluetooth 3.0 onboard. Kind of crazy when you think about it, being that the protocol offered some pretty promising stuff when it went official in April of 2009. Fast forward to today, and it looks as if the Bluetooth SIG is storming forward regardless, as the Bluetooth 4.0 core specification has now been adopted with ” low energy technology ” as the standout feature. This step means that companies can begin to work towards integration of BT 4.0 in actual end-user products, and if the SIG has its way, the tech will begin to show up in minuscule devices that haven’t been able to take advantage of Bluetooth thus far. In fact, they want this stuff in applications “not even possible or imagined today.” Looks like someone better get those imagination gears turning, ’cause Q4 2010 certainly isn’t an eternity from now. Kogan’s latest fantasy product? An IPTV with Chrome browser, WiFi & gaming
Apr 10th
The always optimistic Kogan isn’t just aiming at tablets , it’s posted a video showing off a new IPTV that could do what the big boys won’t when (if) it ships later this year. These Chinese built HDTVs feature WiFi and video on-demand widgets similar to what everyone else is doing, but things start to get interesting in this YouTube video (embedded after the break) around the 1:05 mark when he pulls up a Chrome browser window and navigates the internet easily using the remote, as well as testing out some gesture controlled games and a Bluetooth keyboard. More than a few no-name builders had displays with similar capabilities up and running at CES so while it’s easy to see someone shipping one or two of these but with Kogan’s track record (what happened to those OLED TVs ?) it’s difficult to disguise our doubt it will be among them. True believers are invited to post suggestions for other features on the company blog — we’re thinking a dedicated Engadget Show channel is just what the doctor ordered. Cowon J3 PMP looks cool in its brushed metal case
Mar 16th
Hot on the heels of giving our opinion on Cowon’s (relatively) big-screened V5 media player we have some news on the next player in line from the company. It’s called the J3 and, while Cowon has officially acknowledged its existence, its specifications have only been unveiled thanks to what looks to be an internationally coordinated effort on behalf of gadget lovers everywhere. The J3 is said to have a 3.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a resolution of 480 x 272, pulling content from 4, 8, or 16GB of internal storage — content that can also be routed to a TV. There’ll be Bluetooth to pump tunes wirelessly and a new metal case that’s said to improve the quality feel of the player. That, of course, we won’t know about until we can feel one of the things, and according to the company some folks will be able to do just that before the month is through. Samsung SHW-M120S to be first Android phone with Bluetooth 3.0?
Mar 9th
Samsung’s all about records: firsts , biggests , smallests , thinnests , you get the idea. Indeed, it was just a few weeks ago that the company managed to slip the very first Bluetooth 3.0 certified handset through — but these guys never rest, and it looks like they’re already prepping to follow up that feat by throwing Android into the mix. The Bluetooth SIG is showing certification for an SHW-M120S model that apparently features a 3.3-inch WVGA AMOLED display, 5 megapixel autofocus primary cam plus VGA secondary, WiFi, GPS, HSDPA, and — yes, you guessed it — a Bluetooth Core Version of 3.0, meaning you’ll likely be able to fling files around to your house full of Bluetooth 3.0-capable devices with the greatest of ease. The presence of a T-DMB tuner means this sucker is targeted squarely at the South Korean market, but we’ve no doubt Sammy plans on taking 3.0 global so that it can… you know, have the world’s most Bluetooth 3.0 devices. PuntoCellulare seems to have a pretty good shot of it, and it looks pretty much how you’d expect any self-respecting Samsung smartphone to look in 2010 — in other words, there’s nothing that screams “I can wirelessly transfer data short distances at heretofore-unknown speeds” just by looking at it, and that’s totally fine by us. Rumor is we’ll see this launch “in the next few weeks.” [Thanks, juanvaldez] Samsung SHW-M120S to be first Android phone with Bluetooth 3.0? originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Mar 2010 15:41:00 EST. Samsung’s WiFi-enabled CL80 adds touch of AMOLED to 14MP sensor
Jan 6th
Samsung’s AMOLED obsession continues unabated as it has just taken the official wraps off the 3.7-inch touchscreen-equipped CL80. Already well detailed in an earlier leak, this shooter crams a 7x optical zoom lens plus WiFi and Bluetooth antennae inside one of those unreasonably thin enclosures that are all the rage these days. It’s the twenty- teens now, so naturally you get a jumbo 14.2 megapixel sensor with optical image stabilization as well as a 720p movie mode. Coming out this spring, the CL80 has already garnered a 2010 CES Innovation Award, but if you can settle for a 3.5-inch conventional LCD and do without the wireless options, Samsung will sell you the otherwise identical TL240 at a presumably more affordable price point this February. Dive past the break for the full PR and specs.
