New rumors about Apple’s 2nd-Gen OLED iPad, still seems unlikely
Jul 13th
There are some new rumors about Apple ‘s 2nd-Gen iPad, that will use 5.6″ and 7″ AMOLED displays. According to the rumors, the iPad 2 will be launched at 4Q 2010. A new 9.7″ version will also be released, with some “minor” changes, and will still use an IPS-LCD. The smaller iPads will mainly target the e-reader market. While it’s true that OLED costs are expected to drop, it’s still unlikely that Apple will find a supplier that can make enough OLED displays. Samsung can’t keep up with current demand for smaller displays (4″ or less), and their new plant will not be ready by the July 2011 . There are other companies working on new OLED plants ( LG , AUO , TPO ) but these will also not be able to meet Apple’s demand.

iPhone 4 vs Galaxy S, part deux: HD video playback (video)
Jun 26th
We just couldn’t leave this face-off of superscreens alone, and went back for another bite at the cherry. Admittedly, we found out the Galaxy S had a browser-specific brightness setting that we hadn’t maxed out before setting off our camera hounds, so we’ve gone and remedied earlier comparison shots with the gallery below, and just as a bonus, we’ve now also run a HD video clip on both phones. This was to see how the Hummingbird and A4 SOCs,considered close siblings , handled some taxing video work and also to again compare performance deep down on the pixel level. What we can tell you now is that both handsets chewed through the 1080p clip with ease and that both gave results we have no hesitation in describing as sublime. Click past the break for the up close and personal video comparison action. iPhone 4 Retina Display vs. Galaxy S Super AMOLED… fight!
Jun 24th
If the title of this post isn’t enough to entice you, we don’t know what else to say. We’ve gone and run some sunlit comparisons between Apple’s brand spanking new phone’s Retina Display and Samsung’s equally fresh and exclusive Super AMOLED panel on the Galaxy S. We don’t know if we’ll be able to settle the argument , but we’re certainly going to subject both superphones to an expansive visual inspection. Follow us after the break for video exploration of this most pressing topic. Clearwire intros new WiMAX mobile hotspots, Mac-friendly 3G / 4G USB WWAN modem
Jun 17th
Lookin’ for yet another avenue to hop on the 4G superhighway? Fret not, as Clearwire has just doled out a trio of new products intended to help you do just that. Prior to today, you had only a smattering of options to actually tap into Clear’s WiMAX network , but the Clear Spot 4G ( WiMAX only), Clear Spot 4G+ (dual-mode with 3G / 4G support) and Clear 4G+ Mobile USB stick have all arrived to give choosy moms more choices. The prior two are simply mobile broadband hotspots (think MiFi , but for 4G), with the 4G+ offering support for Sprint’s 3G network if you happen to leave one of those few WiMAX zones already lit. The USB stick is particularly interesting, as it’s the first dual-mode device hawked by Clear that’s fully compatible with Apple OS X. The Clear Spot 4G will be made by InfoMark and available to purchase for $99.99 next month; those who hate committing can also lease one for $4.99 per month. The Sierra Wireless-built Spot 4G+ (a rebadged Overdrive ; shown left) demands a hefty premium for that 3G support, with an MSRP of $224.99 (or least for $5.99 per month) and a similar July ship date. The 4G+ Mobile USB stick (shown right) will support OS X 10.5.x and 10.6.x (along with Windows, of course), and can be snapped up today for $114.99 or leased monthly for $5.99. Head on past the break if you’re thirsty for more. Editorial: ESPN bypasses corporate red tape with iPad and Xbox 360, wannabe innovators should take note
Jun 12th
So, there’s two ways to look at this. One would be to gawk at the fact that ESPN , the worldwide leader in sports broadcasting, is using iPads and Xbox 360 consoles — common devices that are widely available to mere mortals — to drive content to millions of consumers. Another would be to gawk at the fact that ESPN has somehow managed to keep its finger on the pulse of innovation, despite being swallowed by Disney and being a part of one of the planet’s most monolithic corporations. Thankfully for you, we’re going to cover both angles here. Our eyes were opened after stepping foot in the company’s Bristol headquarters and really getting a feel for how the company views technology and its integration into programming, and it led us to a philosophical conclusion about how corporations should (but oftentimes aren’t) be taking advantage of what’s readily available. Ready to get schooled? Head on past the break . iPhone 4′s retina display claim put under the math microscope
Jun 10th
Samsung might have entertained us with some trash talk about the iPhone 4′s IPS LCD yesterday, but this stuff is of a rather more somber variety. Raymond Soneira, president of monitor diagnostics firm DisplayMate , has said that Apple’s retina display marketing is inaccurate, because he believes a display that truly makes pixels indistinguishable to the human eye would require a density in the vicinity of 477dpi. The iPhone 4 has 326dpi, and by now you might be surmising that Steve Jobs flat out lied when he said that the iPhone 4′s pixels are too small for the human retina to discern from 12 inches away. But not so fast, says Phil Plait from Discover , whose résumé includes calibrating a camera on board the Hubble space telescope . He’s done the math too and finds that the 477 number applies only to people with perfect vision. For the vast majority of us, Steve’s claim stands up to scrutiny; even folks with 20/20 eyesight wouldn’t be able to tell where one pixel ends and another begins. So it turns out Apple can do its math, even if its marketing isn’t true for every single humanoid on the planet. iPhone 4′s retina display claim put under the math microscope originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 16:01:00 EDT. Samsung: iPhone 4′s retina display is nice, but it’s no AMOLED
Jun 9th
Samsung seems to have taken exception to a little sidenote made by Steve Jobs during his iPhone 4 announcement at WWDC10 this Monday. While waxing poetic on the virtues of IPS , Jobs let us know that he considers it an entirely superior display technology to OLED, and now the world’s biggest display maker has a few words to say about it. According to a Samsung spokesperson, the high-res retina display on the iPhone 4 offers only a 3 to 5 percent advantage in sharpness over its own Galaxy S Super AMOLED screen, but sucks down a wasteful 30 percent more power. Moreover, Samsung believes its screens offer better viewing angles and contrast, and concludes by saying that “structurally, IPS LCD technology cannot catch up with AM-OLED display technology.” And here we thought Samsung and Apple were getting along so well .
