2011 year in review… and what will 2012 bring us?
Dec 28th
So, 2011 is almost over – and it was another exciting year for the OLED industry (here’s our list of most popular 2011 stories, by the way ). The biggest AMOLED player is still Samsung – and they enjoyed great success. During 2011 Samsung launched Super AMOLED Plus displays – which use a normal RGB matrix. They keep producing Super AMOLED ( Pentile ) displays too, and even reached HD resolution using these on some phones. Samsung’s own Galaxy S II phone (which uses a 4.3″ Super AMOLED Plus display) was a huge success – and is in fact Samsung’s fastest selling phone ever . But Samsung is not just targeting phones and digital cameras. Larger AMOLEDs are coming too. Samsung is producing the 5″ AMOLED used in Sony’s PSP Vita, and Samsung’s own Galaxy Note phone has a 5.3″ Super AMOLED HD display. In September the company announced the largest Super AMOLED display yet – a 7.7″ 1280×800 panel that will be used in the upcoming Galaxy Tab 7.7 Android tablet (which will be released soon)

Analyst: Apple and Sharp to jointly develop iPhone and iPad OLED panels within 1-2 years
Nov 22nd
Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies says that he believes that Apple decided to buy iPad 3, iPhone 5 and TV display panels from Sharp. At first these will be IGZO based LCDs – which will be brighter, clearer, thinner and more efficient than existing LCDs. But Misek also believes that Sharp and Apple will jointly develop OLED displays (probably IGZO based as well) within 1-2 years which will be used in future iPhone and iPad generations. OLED TV panels aren’t expected until 2015. Misek says that the two companies are working towards a new printing technology for producing these small/medium OLED panels – and that a pilot line will be in place by middle 2012 for testing purposes. Full production will be possible in 2013. The new technology, according to Misek, is a combination of inkjet printing and a daisy wheel. The daisy wheel is an impact printing technology and I’m not sure how it relates to OLEDs. read more

LG’s OLED TV will be Oxide-TFT based. This will not be mass production, but the company hopes that towards the end of 2012 they will announce their plans for mass production. LG Display is aiming towards 80 yield in their pilot plant, and will announce the yield in the middle of 2Q 2012. LG OLED TV prototype We already know that LG isn’t developing small OLED panels for mobiles any more , but LG are developing plastic based OLEDs (using their existing 4.5-Gen fab) as they consider these to have the real value for the mobile solution. They say that as they have experience with plastic based e-paper prototypes they hope that this is will not take long to develop. read more

New Apple patent describes a transparent OLED on solid background, new OLED iPhone rumors emerge
Nov 4th
Apple filed a new patent describing a new display system which incorporates a transparent OLED on a solid white background. The idea is to conserve battery use – and when there’s a need to display a white pixel, you simply switch the OLED pixel off, which then shows the white background beneath. The system also includes a switchable layer between the OLED and the white background. This layer can be either transparent or black – which will allow to see black pixels (which is not possible in normal transparent OLEDs). Apple has filed several OLED patents in the past years. In July the company filed a patent for a 3D multiple transparent OLED displays device , and in February the company filed three different OLED patents , the main one being an OLED with an integrated touch sensor. read more

New rumors about Apple’s 2nd-Gen OLED iPad, still seems unlikely
Jul 13th
There are some new rumors about Apple ‘s 2nd-Gen iPad, that will use 5.6″ and 7″ AMOLED displays. According to the rumors, the iPad 2 will be launched at 4Q 2010. A new 9.7″ version will also be released, with some “minor” changes, and will still use an IPS-LCD. The smaller iPads will mainly target the e-reader market. While it’s true that OLED costs are expected to drop, it’s still unlikely that Apple will find a supplier that can make enough OLED displays. Samsung can’t keep up with current demand for smaller displays (4″ or less), and their new plant will not be ready by the July 2011 . There are other companies working on new OLED plants ( LG , AUO , TPO ) but these will also not be able to meet Apple’s demand.

iPhone 4 vs Galaxy S, part deux: HD video playback (video)
Jun 26th
We just couldn’t leave this face-off of superscreens alone, and went back for another bite at the cherry. Admittedly, we found out the Galaxy S had a browser-specific brightness setting that we hadn’t maxed out before setting off our camera hounds, so we’ve gone and remedied earlier comparison shots with the gallery below, and just as a bonus, we’ve now also run a HD video clip on both phones. This was to see how the Hummingbird and A4 SOCs,considered close siblings , handled some taxing video work and also to again compare performance deep down on the pixel level. What we can tell you now is that both handsets chewed through the 1080p clip with ease and that both gave results we have no hesitation in describing as sublime. Click past the break for the up close and personal video comparison action.
