Sony shows a new 24.5" OLED glasses-free 3D TV, to launch for the B2B market in 2011?
Jan 9th
Sony has unveiled a new OLED TV prototype, this one is a 24.5″ model that supports glasses-free 3D . Interestingly, Sony plans to launch this TV during 2011 – but for the B2B market (for professional broadcasting use). The quality is great, but the price will be very high of course, so Sony cannot market this to consumers. This is not Sony’s first OLED aimed for broadcasting professionals – they also offer the PVM-740 monitor that has a 7.4″ OLED (but no 3D). This TV seems to be quite identical to the one Sony showed at CES 2010 , although now the 3D is glasses-free. In any case, it’s great to hear yet again that Sony hasn’t bailed out on OLEDs … read more

Sony is showing a new 3D Heads-Up-Display (visor) prototype – that uses two 720p (1280×720) OLED microdisplays. Other features includes 5.1 surround audio and a blue LED strip on the front. This is just a prototype, but it’s good to see Sony using OLEDs there. It’s not clear whether Sony is actually developed the OLED microdisplays themselves – it might be that they’re using eMagin ‘s SXGA OLED-XL displays. read more

Sony: 3D TV could become an important market for OLED displays
Jul 21st
Sony’s VP of solutions engineering in the US Pete Ludé says that 3D TV could become an important market for OLED displays. Sony says that while LED LCD 3D TV are effective, but only if the resolution and refresh rate is not too high. Active-Shutter 3D needs double the refresh rate (because it alternates between the two eyes), so 120fps needs a 240Hz TV – or higher. At these rates, OLEDs are easier to use. OLED displays also offer less crossover between the stereo images. Sony 24.5-inch 3D OLED prototype Sony are looking into OLEDs, and are still enthusiastic about the technology, are not yet committed to OLEDs as the technology of choice for long-term 3D displays. In CES 2010, Sony has demoed a 24.5″ 3D OLED prototype (shown above). Back in January we posted about 3D being the “killer application for OLEDs” . In May, we also reported that Samsung are very confident about large OLED TVs for 3D
