Samsung Super AMOLED explained in pretty moving pictures (video)
Using “super” to describe your new display technology just begs for criticism. Especially when the word is affixed to a handheld display technology as notoriously difficult (if near impossible ) to see in direct sunlight as OLED. Fortunately, Samsung’s Super AMOLED appears to have licked the outdoor readability issue while bettering the features that made us fall in love with AMOLEDs in the first place. First off, it’s thinner since the touch sensors are now integrated into the display; colors are more vivid due to the removal of the obfuscating touch sensor layer that sits on top of TFT LCD and traditional AMOLED touchscreen displays; and even the viewing angle has been improved. You won’t find a soundtrack in the video posted after the break because the technology is already booming enough. Samsung (or actually Lee Woo-Jong, SMD’s marketing VP) is giving us some interesting updates on their AMOLED displays and production plants. So first of all, they expect the new 5.5-Gen plant to start mass producing in July 2011. The new plant will increase Samsung’s AMOLED capacity ten-fold: from 3 million displays a month to 30 million (assuming all displays made in the new plant will be around 3″). Samsung also says that they now expect AMOLED screens shipments to reach 700 million by 2015 ( in May, they said it’ll be 600 ). read more

bNetTV has posted a short interview with Brian Berkeley, Samsung’s OLED R&D VP. He’s not willing to actually say when OLED TVs should arrive, but he did say they are ‘coming soon’, and that Samsung “have their eyes set on the possibility of OLED TVs”. Brian also says that OLEDs will be especially suited for 3D TVs – we’ve heard that before, of course, from Samsung and from Sony as well. A couple of months ago, Brian said that ‘OLED TVs are viable’ . It’s good to hear that he sees them coming soon now!

We’d already heard that Samsung’s 7-inch Android-based tablet (apparently known as the Galaxy Tab ) would be rolling out sometime in the third quarter of this year , and it looks like we now also know when it’ll be making its official debut. According to South Korea’s JoongAng Daily, an unnamed “high-ranking official” at Samsung has confirmed that the device will be officially unveiled at IFA, which kicks off September 3rd in Berlin. No more new details beyond that, unfortunately, but previous reports have suggested that the device will match its smartphone counterpart with an AMOLED display, and boast some decent specs across the board, including Android 2.2, a 1.2GHz Cortex A8 processor, 16GB of on-board memory, and both WiFi and 3G connectivity. Samsung’s Cetus SGH-i917 sashays into FCC database, winks seductively at AT&T

AT&T came right out and confessed that it would be ” the premiere carrier ” for Windows Phone 7 , and while it’s obviously far too early to say if that’ll be the case, this ain’t a bad way to start proving one’s point. Samsung’s Cetus (SGH-i917) was just recently confirmed to be one of the first commercial Windows Phone 7 devices last week, and now the always-disclosing FCC database has shed even more light on the phone’s intentions. Based on the mention of 850 / 1,900MHz frequency support — and that whole “SGH-i917 (ATT)” marking on the label — it’s pretty safe to assume that this 4-inch, AMOLED-packin’ superphone will soon be fighting with the iPhone 4 for shelf space. There’s obviously no indication of when Ma Bell plans on releasing this one to the wilds, but it’s typically not too far out after hitting this milestone. Giddy yet? Pantech drops AMOLED completely due to shortage, may resume use in 2H 2011

The Pantech Vega that just hit Korea may boast a sizable 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, but don’t expect future phones from the Helio manufacturer to follow suit — after suffering the same shortages that drove HTC to Sony’s SLCD-illuminated doorstep , Pantech’s also temporarily giving active-matrix organic technology the boot. Now, you may not give two nickels about the technologies in Pantech’s next handset, but the firm’s got a finger on the industry’s pulse. So when an unnamed executive says “phones to be rolled out in the first half of next year” won’t use AMOLED, that hints at when the shortage for US-bound devices might also let up. In case you’re curious, 2H 2011 is when Samsung’s next AMOLED facility is slated to open, though by that point AU Optronics and TPO Display should be shipping the screens as well. Samsung are still keen on OLED TVs , which will by the “dominant technology in next-generation TVs by 2015″. They will be the ultimate active-shutter 3D TVs . Samsung has plans to use an Gen 8 (2200mm x 2500mm sheet size) production line for the OLED TVs. There’s no date or real commitment yet, but this will hopefully happen within the next few years. Samsung 14-inch 3D OLED prototype There are still some technical issues to overcome. For their upcoming 5.5-Gen plant , SMD plans to introduce low-temperature poly-Si TFTs using conventional excimer laser annealing (ELA). TFTs formed with this technology often exhibit variation in characteristics, and this method might prove difficult in larger line. SMD is also working on other technologies: improved ELA technology, sequential lateral solidification (SLS) and super grain silicon (SGS).
