Samsung’s upcoming tablet computer, the S-Pad is confirmed for the second half of 2010 (some report an August release). There are rumors that this tablet will run on Google’s Android OS and have a 7″ Super-AMOLED (touch) display. Other features include Wi-Fi, 3G (SK Telecom in Korea) and USB connectivity. This is interesting news. Currently, the largest super-AMOLED display is the 4″ used in the Galaxy S smartphone. We know that Samsung are working on 7″ AMOLEDs (they’ll use one in the 700Z photo frame ). read more

Fluxim has released a new version (v3.1) of their device simulation software SETFOS. The new version comes with a new steady-state numerical algorithm that allows for fast calculation of current-voltage curves and an improved transient solver. Fitting of experimental data for the extraction of electrical material parameters like charge mobilities and HOMO/LUMO levels becomes feasible. The powerful optical solver is used to quantify device characteristics like radiation modes of OLEDs, absorption efficiencies of solar cells or to determine material refractive index dispersions. The software provides quantitative units for light radiation, a treatment of rough interfaces and enhanced emission zone extraction methods.

What to expect from SID 2010

The SID (Society for Information Displays) conference is the leading Display trade show, and SID 2010 will take place towards the end of May(23/5 till the 28/5). What can we expect from this show? SID is not a consumer oriented show, and usually companies do not show new products – so we don’t expect any new phones or an OLED TV . But we do hope that some companies will show us new medium/large OLED panels that are ready for production. Sony 24.5-inch 3D OLED prototype OLED was one of the most talked about technologies in past SID events, and we hope this will be true for 2010 also. There are dozens of planned sessions dedicated to OLEDs , talking about OLED materials, OLED Lighting, OLED devices, transparent OLEDs, flexible OLEDs and more. We’ll be happy to hear about Samsung’s transparent OLEDs – not only new prototypes and technical achievements, but commercialization news as well (about that AMOLED laptop perhaps?). We’ll also be interested to hear news from Sony, who seem to be back into OLED production .

Novaled demonstrates OLEDs on metal substrates

Novaled is demonstrating OLEDs made on metal (steel) substrates that are only 0.7mm thick. Those substrates require specific top-emitting OLED structures, and Novaled has developed dedicated ITO-free OLEDs that has a similar performance to standard bottom-emission OLEDs. Novaled is also working on thin-film encapsulation that will enable flexible OLEDs. Novaled say that metal substrates has several advantages: they will enable flexibility, they have good hear conduction properties, and the “open the roadmap” towards low-cost roll-to-roll production. They also look great and are very robust.
