Pioneer to develop OLED Lighting with Mitsubishi Chemical
Pioneer announced that they have agreed to cooperate with Mitsubishi Chemical on OLED Lighting. Pioneer was the first company to actually make OLED panels, but have exited from the OLED display market in 2005 (and will stop making TVs alltogether in 2010 ). It’s great to hear they are back into OLEDs. Mitsubishi Chemical is already working with UDC towards Materials for use in Phosphorescent OLED Displays Fabricated Through Solution or "Wet" Processing Methods .

Blackbody will show new OLED lamp designs at the NOW! Maison & Objet Fair (September 3rd to 7th, 2010). All of the new lamps were designed by C+B Lefebvre. Those lamps are available to buy, but probably cost quite a bit . Here are my two favorites: The first lamp (shown above) is called 6″O” with an active area of 540cm2, color temperature of 3200 K°, 26W power consumption and it weights 5.5Kg : “Providing both linear and surface illumination, this light bridge creates an enlightened area free of shadows and glare. This virtually tamed lighting offers both direct illumination whilst simultaneously bathing the surrounding area in a halo of soft light. read more

NanoMarkets released a new report (“ OLED Lighting, An Eight-Year Market Forecast (2010) ” in which they say that OLED lighting will generate $6 billion in revenue by 2015. OLED lighting will grow quickly because of the need for cost efficient lighting in a number of different applications, including general illumination, architectural lighting, backlighting, vehicular lighting and signage. Novaled transparent OLED lighting panel Most firms today focus on general illumination and/or architectural lighting sectors. These two markets will generate around $4 billion in 2015. Vehicular lighting is expected to bring over $750 million. Nanomarkets say that if OLED will provide an alternative backlighting technology for LCDs, these alone could generate further $1.4 billion by 2015. read more

Samsung have been using UDC’s PHOLED materials (red, and soon green) for quite some time – the original agreement was announced in 2005 . The agreement has expired, and the companies agreed to extend it for 3 months (until September 30th). Universal Display and Samsung will negotiate in an effort to enter into a new business arrangement.

Universal Display announced that they have been awarded another Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I $99,900 program from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Under this program (titled “Novel Optical Enhancement for Thin Phosphorescent OLED Lighting Panels”) Universal Display intends to demonstrate a white phosphorescent OLED lighting panel that meets Energy Star criteria using an optical enhancement technique which improves outcoupling efficiency while preserving the thin, elegant form factor of the white OLED lighting panel. Universal Display will employ a novel outcoupling technique that performs as well as thicker treatments, such as macro-extractors or outcoupling blocks, but is significantly thinner. Outcoupling enhancements are commonly used to increase the amount of light that is emitted as useful light. In addition to maintaining its thin and light weight form factor, the resulting white PHOLED lighting panel, which UDC intends to deliver to the DOE, may improve the company’s previously reported lighting panel efficacy results by over 25% and demonstrate a desirable path to meet the Energy Star Category B criteria for solid state lighting.

The Printable Electronics Technology Centre ( PETEC ) has announced plans for a new prototyping line to support the lighting and Organic Photovoltaic sectors. The new line is targeted at industries needing large area coating capability alongside the need for reproducible uniform and low defectivity thin film coating onto glass and plastic substrates. It is designed to be an automated batch tool based on cassette handling of samples to minimise manual intervention. The specification has been aligned with the needs of the SSL and PV industry. It will produce up to 20 samples per day with a panel size from 100mm to 200mm square. The line will have slot-die and spin coating modules, metal and organic evaporation and encapsulation. It will enable the deposition of solution and small molecule OLED material technologies. It will target fine coating active layers of 10-200nm thinness with uniformity of +-5% across the full panel width. Last week we reported that PolyPhotonix plans to launch a 8″ 60lm/W OLED Lighting pane l. They will be using this line at PETEC.

Universal Display has announced a new light-blue phosphorescent OLED emitter system , suitable for both display and lighting applications. Today they are giving us more information about the new material. Universal Display’s new light-blue emitter system offers CIE coordinates of (0.17, 0.37) and a peak wavelength of 472 nm. It also provides a luminous efficiency of > 45 candelas per Ampere, corresponding to > 20% external quantum efficiency at 1,000 candelas per square meter (cd/m 2 ). Under accelerated test conditions, this new emitter system demonstrates an operating lifetime of approximately 9,000 hours, to 50% of an initial luminance of 1,000 cd/m 2 . These performance gains are significant, representing a 30% increase in luminous efficiency and an almost 100% increase in operating lifetime, as compared to Universal Display’s earlier-generation light-blue PHOLED emitter system.
