More information on Mitsubishi Chemical and Pioneer’s OLED Lighting program
Earlier today we got word that Pioneer and Mitsubishi Chemical will jointly develop OLED Lighting . Now we have some more information. Pioneer will be the one to actually make the panels, and Mitsubishi will sell them across Verbatim’s worldwide sales network. The plan is to start mass production in 2011, with a sales target of $335 million in 2015 and $1.1 billion in 2020. The two companies are currently researching OLED lighting panels that use printable hole injecting material (HIM) and new emitting materials, and will also research printable OLED lighting development and commercialization. Mitsubishi plans to start early stage mass production and marketing of new printable emitting materials, which probably the PHOLED materials developed together with UDC . We’ll be able to view their first prototype (a dimmable/tone adjustable OLED panel, which Mitsubishi say it’s the world’s first) at the Light+Building exhibition, April 11-16 Frankfurt, Germany. Samsung (or actually Lee Woo-Jong, SMD’s marketing VP) is giving us some interesting updates on their AMOLED displays and production plants. So first of all, they expect the new 5.5-Gen plant to start mass producing in July 2011. The new plant will increase Samsung’s AMOLED capacity ten-fold: from 3 million displays a month to 30 million (assuming all displays made in the new plant will be around 3″). Samsung also says that they now expect AMOLED screens shipments to reach 700 million by 2015 ( in May, they said it’ll be 600 ). read more

Blackbody will show new OLED lamp designs at the NOW! Maison & Objet Fair (September 3rd to 7th, 2010). All of the new lamps were designed by C+B Lefebvre. Those lamps are available to buy, but probably cost quite a bit . Here are my two favorites: The first lamp (shown above) is called 6″O” with an active area of 540cm2, color temperature of 3200 K°, 26W power consumption and it weights 5.5Kg : “Providing both linear and surface illumination, this light bridge creates an enlightened area free of shadows and glare. This virtually tamed lighting offers both direct illumination whilst simultaneously bathing the surrounding area in a halo of soft light. read more
Shanghai Tianma to build a 4.5-Gen AMOLED pilot production line in a $72 million investment

Shanghai Tianma has decided to build a pilot AMOLED production line (4.5-Gen) in a $72 million investment (the company will apply for a $40 million government funding). The pilot line will be placed within Tianma’s existing 4.5-Gen LCD production line, and will output around 1000 glass substrates monthly. This will probably be China’s second AMOLED pilot line, as Visionox’s one is already online today . Via OLEDW

eMagin announced that it has signed an agreement to built its first production OLED deposition machine. The new machine is expected to increase OLED deposition capacity by approximately tenfold, to increase yield significantly and contribute to substantially more automated processes. The new proprietary machine replaces the company’s existing Satella, an R&D machine adapted and used by eMagin for production since its inception in 1996. The new machine is expected to be completed in Spring 2011, with production beginning in the Fall 2011.
Transparent Light OLED Origami

Universal Display has created a nice demo of their transparent OLED lighting panels – the Transparent Light Origami (TLO). It is made from 16 triangular glass PHOLED (Phosphorescent-OLEDs) panels that glow in either red, blue or green. When turned off, the panels are clear. Each panel is connected to the next via a friction hinge, so the structure can be folded and bent into a variety of shapes. The design of the TLO was inspired by the observation that colors emitted by overlapping transparent PHOLED panels combine in an additive way, as is the case with overlapping PHOLED materials in an OLED panel. Red and green produces yellow, red and blue produces magenta, etc. All three colors overlapping produce white light. As illustrated by the TLO, when overlapping layers of red, green and blue PHOLED materials are sandwiched within a single panel, white light is emitted.
APUS OLED watch review

The nice guys over at APUS has kindly sent me an OLED watch for review. This is their Alpha Dark Force, which uses a blue PMOLED (they have other watches that use red or white PMOLEDs). APUS are selling the phones on-line in their web shop . The watches are also available in Amazon.com . The Alpha Dark Force, shown above costs $129 . First impressions When you first take it out of the box, you notice something strange – the display is off. Then you realize that that’s how it’s supposed to be – the watch does not display anything until you press a button. Then it shows you the time for a few seconds, and turns off again. APUS say that this is to preserve the battery, which will drain in a couple of days if the display will be always on
New low-cost OLED lighting project gets funding from the UK

A new project called TOPDRAWER (Thin organic prototypes, design, research, applications with end-user recognition) has secured funding from the UK government, and will start in early November and will run for 2.5 years. This is actually a followup project to TOPLESS , and is also lead by Thorn lighting. TOPLESS project OLED lamp prototype The consortium will develop and demonstrate a printed manufacturing process that will be integrated into attractive designs that have been created through consultation with potential end-users. The manufacturing process will be proved and tested within PETEC, that will acquire and install a large-area coating line. In June 2008 we interviewed Dr. Geoff Williams, TOPLESS’ manager (and we also assume he will manage the new project). In December 2008, TOPLESS showed a prototype lamp. The efficiency is about 17Lm/W (as there is no out-coupling. With out-coupling the efficiency is over 30Lm/W), each panel operating at 3W. The panels are just 0.7mm thick, made by Sumation with TOPLESS materials read more

AU Optronics has acquired Toshiba Mobile Display’s subsidiary, AFPD . AFPD had a Gen-4.5 LTPS plant. Now we hear that AUO plans to use a third of the lines in that plant for AMOLED production. This means 15,000 substrates a month in 2011. AUO’s own Gen 3.5 factory (which will also go in line in 2011 ) will contribute 7,000 monthly substrates. AUO 14-inch OLED prototype
